A trance classic from over a decade ago has been re-worked by Irish producer Greg Downey as he re-visits a wide open space with Mansun's very own Paul Draper. It’s been floating around as a bootleg for donkeys but it’s finally out on official release...

I’m certain that you will have all heard the original version of this track. I say original, but not the original recording by Mansun but the remixes that came around 1999 that pushed it into cult status amongst trance fans. The ‘Perfecto Mix’ by in the day was and still is one of my favourite records ever, a note that I’m sure many will agree. With any classic, especially in trance circles, it’s always a target for a remake and Greg Downey took the challenge for this one. This official release is actually a bootleg that Greg first started playing well over a year and half ago, but its been singed by Nebula and given the nod of approval by Mansun’s very own Paul Draper (vocalist/guitarist) who gave Greg a fresh vocal for his official release. We all know Greg Downey’s talent for trance music in particular, his last release on VANDIT ‘Global Code’ was huge and he’s a man with impeccable taste. This can only lead to one thing with the remix; it sure isn’t a bad one!

:: Radio Edit
:: Club Mix

If you keep true to the original you can’t really go that wrong. Greg has injected his own personal flavour into Wide Open Space with his immense detail in layering a track together with the correct balance. He’s only got the one remix in this release with what he’s tagged the Club Mix backed up by a shorted Radio Edit for instant euphoria. Greg’s put a nice steady pace on this with a deep beat and crisp kicks that pack a touching punch on the lead. Things start to get exciting as a rolling bass line grips the bottom end of the track and a short stuttered piece of the vocal pops in with harmonic sweeping strings that add an immense depth to the track. That intro cuts and the vocal starts to flow, your well into a ‘Wide Open Space’ now but the best is yet to come. It’s all about building the tempo, atmosphere and Greg does that superbly with his sounds implemented into here. Delicate piano keys, true to the old remixes trickle along, gorgeous sweeps of rear end sound tickle the ear drums and inflict a mood of euphoria along with it. The main break is a true epic that on a huge sounds system will send the place wild, and with this mix being played by a lot of the scenes top names it’s been doing just that!

A superb remix by one of Ireland's rising dance talents who, may not have changed much from the 'original' that got the scene in euphoria years gone by, but has push his production talent through it to create an uplifting epic with one the best known vocal hooks in trance music. This one is highly recommended.
