 It‘s been twenty cycles since John O’Callaghan and Bryan Kearney first stoked dancefloor fires together.
Indeed, you’d have to rewind right the way to the fabled Discover Records label’s 14th to find ‘Restricted Motion’ - their year-one together. (A track, incidentally still so beloved, it was re-released on vinyl just last week!).
In 2015 the pair formed their shared vision up into an absolute unit of an act. Through its Key4050 tag and 2019’s monumental thirty-track-strong ‘Tales From The Temple’ LP, they paid titular homage to their years clubbing, producing and DJing in Dublin’s North Inner City.
‘Tales’ gave clubbers and music lovers plenty to chew on. But by the same token, that was seven years ago.
Time to go again then …
Having closed the Luminosity Beach Festival with a headlining set, the Kearney/O’Callaghan alliance formally announced Key4050’s return over the summer. Ahead of that, the pair had been midnight oil-ing it in the studio, with a new album rapidly taking shape around them. Coming off the back of their Bo Bruce collab opener, September sees the pair take aim with ‘Empty Space’s follow up.
Comfortably wrapped around Key4050’s artistic coil, ‘Final Memory’ finds John and Bryan rafter-raising across bass, mids and treble. Drum-gallop and storm-force bass lock in its relentless charge, while gulp-inducing harmonic progressions catalyse its momentum further.
Add to that its enigmatically-lingering “I can’t help it” female vocal + a top-of-the-drop, saw-tooth-synth kiss-off and, well, you’ve got yourself a fully certified, primetime, send-‘em-home-with-a-smile floor-weapon.
‘Final Memory’ plants a big new way-marker in Key4050’s timeline. What comes after? Well, if those ‘Temple’ ‘Tales’ are anything to go by though, it’ll be worth hanging around to find out!
