It's been a great year for Rafael Frost with one impressive release after the other and here we have his latest bomb ready to drop on Flashover Recordings...

It's been a great year for Dutch born producer Rafael Frost who has had a stream of excellent releases so far including the melody rich 'Red' and teched up 'Boomerang'. Both of those were released on Ferry Cortsen's Flashover Recordings label for which is very much Rafael's home at the moment. This, 'Black Box' is the latest on Flashover to pop up with two red hot mixes from Rafael that should shake the simplest of sound systems to the ground.

:: Original Mix
:: Red Edit

Right from the first bar this is the kind of record you want to hear more of with its energetic break beat kicking things off with a bang. There are lots of things going off in here at the start with a sweeping deep vocal echo in the background with some sweeping percussion. The intro on the original cuts from the beat build up and gets all rough with a short stabby synth that continues to grind on as the main beat hits. It's deep and rich with plenty of punch from the hats and claps. The sound in here is big and rough but the opening melody on the bass line comes in quite nice. It introduces a spot of calmness with a short synth driven melody that turns into a piano keyed intro the main riff that erupts out of nowhere. The main heart in this track is big room, big sound and big effect with a huge beat to push it through.

The Red Edit is really just that, a nice edit on the formation of the original with a different arrangement on the introduction with the track flowing into the main beat rather than taking a short pause to introduces itself. There is thumping double beat every 6 bars which gets my vote and the building sounds are uplifting to the ear. It's still big room and massive sound but with more energy than the original and a bit more bang. The main melody remains the same with its huge chord changes and massive riff's but the tweaks to the intro and tail end work better for me.

Conclusion:
Another great record from Rafael Frost and another example why Ferry keeps pushing him on his own Label, its just one good release after the next with no need for any outside remixes to add spice to the tune. Great record.
