Cass and Slides latest release comes from the forthcoming album:"burning the candle at both ends".... weird and wonderful..not for the faint hearted
this is a 4 track ep containing A1:Faith Less A2:Valium Behaviour B1:Havoc B2:The Doors:Faith Restored
weird and wonderful..not for the faint hearted....
This limited edition 10" sampler reflects Cass & Slide's overall production talents. They mix a blend of weird twisted synths with that of their nu skool, almost hip hop style breaks. They have recruited Jason Donovan on vocals for Faith Less and The Doors. His peformance gives us a glimpse of the opposite side of what people have seen in recent years.
Faith Less starts out almost like an 80's chart single. Its slow moving breaks are haunted by the intro of Jason Donovan. The vocal starts out chilled with the low tempo and ambient feel held. The melody gains with weird distorted sounds taking over a faint whispered vocal, which regains in turn to command and become more powerful- to then break for the finale which sees the conclusion of an hypnotic journey.
Valium Behaviour holds all the characteristics of Faith less, although Cass and Slide have gone for a more distorted approach to the melody and the vocal. It begins with alomst a harmonic male singing which leads into an emotive chant. The main body of the track has the feel of sorrow throughout, but is counteracted by the operatic female, who comes through to dominate. In a slow building crescendo deep swirling effects and calculated taps enhance the vocals to round off the track nicely.....
Havoc is the up beat hard hitting track that we know they produce on many occasions. As previously mentioned their nu skool breaks reflect hip hop and tech house tracks. Again, they provide a series of male chants to please any vocal fan. Effects distort the chants to blend in to the whole feel that they create. Moody basslines contrast the synths but blend to a nice contrast. The track is that of a triumphant feel (may conclude their album-we'll see) and provides those harsh breaks snippets from that of "maladjusted" and "firebird", sharp stabbing effects to fit in with orchestral undercurrent. This track is unrelenting and draws to a close a little abruptly but leaves you in the feeling of "WOW".
To complete the EP, Cass & Slide come up with what i feel is the strangest track they have produced. Starts with like a guitar strum and the quiet Jason Donovan singing about "the doors". Then the introduction of a similar female chorus to lie under the twisted synths and guitar strum. This has the feel of a horror film but has an ambient melodic vibe. It is a short track but concludes another side to Cass & Slide which you have to admire
Overall i thought the EP reflected the quality which Cass & Slide have in producing. It is a variation on what many of us think of them-major progressive producers. This though, shows us that genres cross and blend to form a whole new style and feel. A broader outlook and understanding is needed to have appreciation for this Ep, but if you have that,or when you get it-you will love it for what it is! A collectors edition which collaborates with the previous sampler released.
