Spread over two CDs, DJs and producers Abbott & Chambers aimed to take you on a tour of all things Alter Ego and trance related. Their Alter Ego label now has numerous subdivisions and so covers an extensive stretch of the many types of quality music which is currently available. Whilst this is indeed 'Alter Ego Sessions', it's by no means limited to the one label - tracks are included from across the board with tunes sourced from other energetic labels such as Monster Tunes, Enhanced Recordings, Captured Music and Recoverworld, amongst others. So now it's quite plain to see how there are so many top tracks crammed into this album.
The first CD, TEN:PM, is a progressive stint. A smooth, deep journey through the most subtle of melodies, gentlest synths and spacey sounds. There are quite a few people who don't give good progressive music much of a chance, but with this CD it is given a chance to shine, and shine it does. Finely executed track selection and smooth, effortless mixing boost the atmosphere and feeling that the first half of this compilation is trying to push. And while enrapturous and compelling in a club, these heavy prog sounds are also able to soothe and relax when listened to in the home.
CD number two, TWO:PM is way more full on and much trancier in nature. We see tracks from Abbott & Chambers themselves included in the tracklisting, along with tracks from exciting talents such as Miikka Leinonen, Matias Lehtola, Kamil Polner and Sonicvibe. With the pace raised and the energy levels stoked, Abbott & Chambers apply the excellence of their mixing and set programming once again, this time raising the roof with a selection of the best uplifting breakdowns and euphoric melodies.
As a whole, these two very different CDs create a fantastically contrasting album made up of two very cleanly cut halves. They showcase not only Abbott & Chambers themselves and not only their Alter Ego labels but by taking a clean and clear snapshot of today's trance, they work together to demonstrate these genres and their subgenres at a much higher level.
Conclusion:
Above and beyond all things, I found this entire album joyous to listen to, and that's the crux of the matter. There have been a lot of high quality albums this year, but Digital State is one I'll be coming back to for some time to come. Simply a must for all trance lovers.
