It's about time we had a catch up with Cosmic Gate with the duo releasing their latest artist album 'Wake Your Mind' last month. It's their 5th to date and by no means their last...
Having been around on the German scene for well over decade and a half now the Cosmic gate partnership shows no signs of splitting. While some duos have come and gone, Cosmic Gate has always remained. In recent years they have beefed up their reputation by taking on a fresh approach with their sound. As they release their 5th artist album the creative bubble and passion for electronic dance music is as strong as ever. They have inspired many of the new faces on the scene today to produce with their back catalogue. There new artist album ‘Wake Your Mind’ may well be their strongest material yet in what is a very diverse album. We had a quick chat to the guys about it.
i:Vibes: You guys were very busy this past summer playing all the big clubs on Ibiza. What night was your most memorable in the summer of 2011?
Cosmic Gate: Fortunately we had a lot of great parties during the year and the summer incl. all gigs in Ibiza were fantastic, best party maybe was with Armin at a rammed Space for the special ASOT show of his, Ibiza once again showed its on top of worlds edm most influencing spots.
i:Vibes: You guys have released your 5th studio album with Wake Your Mind. What was the Cosmic Gate for this album sound wise?
Cosmic Gate: Producing music in general, we just go with the flow, we have no goals for a sound, we simply want it to sound modern, and there for the DJ gigs help to feel early what happens with the productions standards or how arrangements slowly change. For the rest we simply want to produce good music, this is the goal we have and had, also for Wake Your Mind, bring in our ideas and influences together, make an album that offers different styles and genres but still tells one story in the end, like we think Wake Your Mind does.
i:Vibes: You guys are very proud of the first single Be your sound. You have incorporated many different sound styles. What makes this track so unique?
Cosmic Gate: This is maybe more a question to the listener than to us, for us it’s the beauty and character of Emma amazing Vocals, and our harder beats and basslines, that make BYS work great as a track to listen to, but also when you play it in the Club it works fantastic.
i:Vibes: How important was it to have the Cary Brothers on the track Wake your mind? They add a special twist rockfish twist?
Cosmic Gate: They gave a very personal twist to it, as mentioned before, we like to have a nice kind of variety in our music, also the singers of course are a big part of this, so we were more than happy when they first agreed, and secondly delivered this great track to dance to plus sending a great message with their words
i:Vibes: What an amazing new Cosmic Gate take on the classic Jurgen Vries. Was this new remake difficult to produce? What was most difficult in getting the new Cosmic Gate version perfect?
Cosmic Gate: We simply love the original from Jurgen Vries, but as it does not fit the current music that much anymore we play in our tracks, we decided to do a updated mix for our DJ sets only at first. After a while the reactions been so good that we decided to make it an official single release and put it on the album as well.
i:Vibes: Never Apart is a chilling and lovely low tempo thriller with Australian singer Alana Aldea. How challenging is it making a low tempo track in general for Cosmic Gate?
Cosmic Gate: It’s the same than doing any kind of more banging music, we simply follow our feelings, put inside of a track what we think fits it well, we follow our hearts and ears, to hopefully get a result that the listener enjoys as much as we do.
i:Vibes: You produced Nothing ever lasts with Anjunabeats artist Andrew Bayer. What was the strongest sound quality that he brought to the track?
Cosmic Gate: Andrew Bayer is an extraordinary talent, and the strings and beats sure show his handwrite, and we go on putting our cosmic break arrange and production in it, we really love this track, its minimal but works so good in our sets, a track that pushes boundaries for our sound to new levels!
i:Vibes: You hook up with known trance scene vocalist Jes on Flying Blind. Could this be a fourth coming single release?
Cosmic Gate: Flying blind for sure will get a single, if it is number 4 we are not sure, but we think it’s a track we want to see remixed in any case, for us one of the most touching tracks from the album.
i:Vibes: You close Wake your mind with the pretty Beautiful Destruction featuring Alana Aldea. The track has a beautiful melody. What was the inspiration with this song and does the title have a deeper meaning?
Cosmic Gate: The Vocals been written by the new talented Alana Aldea from Australia, and we felt they click right away with our music, the wobbly bassline and the string melody, all fits perfect for a track that is simply different, dark and touchy in one.
i:Vibes: How have Cosmic Gate grown sound wise with this album?
Cosmic Gate: We think we once again have grown from the production side, but also style wise WYM has brought us to a next level, it’s the widest album from the genres we have been influenced by, we never had so many people even out of the EDN scene to let us know that they like the album, and this is a goal we have, to produce music not only for listeners from certain scenes, hopefully reach people ahead of this club scene we all are in.
