© Leon BoilerIt's always a pleasure to grab a word with Leon Bolier and with his debut at Germany's legendary Technoclub on May 7th coming up; it's an even bigger one to get his thoughts...

You don’t need to be stocking the fire on the chilly evening with the sounds of Leon Bolier heating things up. He’s due to do just that inside the very famous surroundings of Talla 2XLC’s Technoclub in Frankfurt on May the 7th as he plays the legendary club night for the first time. We thought it was a good excuse to give a little tap on his door for a word about it and Leon was only to happy to oblige.

i:Vibes: With 2011 4 months over, what has been your biggest highlight this year in the club and in the studio?

Leon: As for playing towards a crowd (not really in a club though): ASOT500 Johannesburg. Big crowd, went totally nuts and the online reach of this show is just beyond imagination. At the ASOT event I started playing my new single – which was called Cape Town after the ASOT pre party in Cape Town – which is my biggest track of the year so far.

i:Vibes: You reached #68 in the 2010 DJ Mag top 100 list. How important is this achievement for you?

Leon: It gives a certain feel of comfort to know that there is so many fans voting for me and thus supporting me. I feel so honoured to be in this worldwide top 100 list of DJs!

i:Vibes: You are giving your Technoclub debut on May 7th, 2011. How excited are you to be playing in the Technoclub?

Leon: Technoclub is a legendary brand in Germany – I met Talla 2XLC a couple of times during gigs and we spoke about the possibility of doing a Technoclub gig somewhere in the future, now the time is there and I am definitely looking forward. I heard there is a very dedicated crowd at Technoclub – which I like!

i:Vibes: When was the first time that you heard the name Talla 2XLC?

Leon: A couple of years back – when Menno de Jong booked Talla for his Intuition parties – back then I knew some names in the scene but wasn’t totally digging deep, and I did my research to found out that Talla was one of the trance godfathers in Germany.

i:Vibes: How important has Talla been for the global dance scene?

Leon: Like said before, I found out he was one of the key people in Germany for the trance scene, Germany being one of the biggest dance markets out there means Talla played a key role in the development of the trance movement over the years.

i:Vibes: How would a Talla 2XLC/Leon Bolier track sound like in 2011?

Leon: Banging. I know Talla likes to play energetic sets, same goes for me. So I think a collaboration would sound like it’s pretty much aimed to the dance floors.

i:Vibes: What can we expect from your DJ set?

Leon: Energy. I play for the dance floors, not for home listening. My sets always are heavily influenced by my own taste of course – but I am always looking for a balance between dance floor bombs and atmosphere at the same time.

i:Vibes: Will you play some of your older classics like Ocean Drive Boulevard or play mostly new material?

Leon: It usually depends: When I am playing to a crowd I have never played to before, I usually play one or more of my own ‘classic’ tracks, crowds I played for many times already might already have been fed up with that, for them I try to play stuff they haven’t heard me play before. This usually is the case when I play in Holland for example. Thus, at Technoclub you can expect some classics as well.

i:Vibes: Who were your early musical inspirations growing up?

Leon: When I was a kid, it was classical music, mostly Chopin and Beethoven. Later on, when I was 12 it was the early eurodance like 2-unlimited – especially because it sounded totally different than anything released before (to me, because I didn’t go to underground house parties when I was 12) this music impressed me that much that I decided that I wanted to make electronic dance music later on. Mid 90s it was the big hardcore wave that influenced me, and when I heard Energy 52’s Café del Mar, that was that. From then on I never listened to hardcore house again, and switched to this melodic dance music I really enjoyed.

i:Vibes: What track inspired you to get into EDM?

Leon: 2 tracks: 2 Unlimited’s No Limit, that was my first discovery of electronic dance music and made me want to produce dance music anyway, and Energy 52’s Café Del Mar 5 years later really pushed me into the trance direction.

i:Vibes: You started your music career in 2003 and in 2005 you released 17 tracks. Did you have a big need to have to release so much early in your career?

Leon: Not really, I just enjoyed producing so much! It wasn’t really about a career planning strategy, it was just about making music I love, and, because labels were interested, releasing it towards a bigger audience.

i:Vibes: How has the Leon Bolier DJ sound developed since 2005?

Leon: It has become more dance floor focused. The same goes for my productions actually – the more you play out the better you can see how a crowd reacts to the tracks you play. In my melodic trance tracks I always try to capture some beauty but at the same time it needs to keep the crowd going as well. Even more atmospheric and more chilled out music I save for my albums and compilation CDs, nice stuff for home listening!

i:Vibes: You released your debut album in 2008 Pictures and last year Phantasma. How has your producing style matured from your first album to the second album?

Leon: It especially has matured on the production side of things, because in two years you can learn a lot regarding production techniques etc. Over those two years new producers and new subgenres have emerged, and everything that impresses me, influences me.

i:Vibes: What can we expect from the next album? In what sound direction are you thinking of going?

Leon: I don’t have any idea actually. I just go with the flow, and produce music I like. Like I said, different styles influence me, new producers as well. Those influences can and will be found in my next artist album of course.

i:Vibes: You have worked with many producers in your career so far. With what producer would you like to be locked away for 24 hours?

Leon: Sasha’s production team. I still feel those guys can teach me a lot. Their sound is so matured, crisp, clean and technically well produced.

i:Vibes: What new material and remixes can we expect from you in the next months?

Leon: At first my single Cape Town will be released on April 26th, on my own label Streamlined Recordings which is a sublabel to Spinnin records. Afterwards I will release my collaboration with Marcus Schössow, and I am working on a new Streamlined 2011 compilation, I am aiming to release this late summer.

i:Vibes: When you are working in the studio on a track, is there a certain way how you go about making the tune? Some producers will start with the melody while others start with a bass line or groove. How do you do it?

Leon: It’s different every time. Sometimes I start out with a melody, sometimes with a bassline or a groove. The tracks that start with a bassline or a groove usually turn out to be more techy.

i:Vibes: Temple One will also be playing at The Technoclub. What is your impression of him as a producer? Could you imagine making a track with him?

Leon: I can imagine making tracks with anyone doing a good job, and Temple One is one of them. However, I don’t have much time at the moment since I have 6(!) unfinished collaborations waiting to be finished at the moment.

i:Vibes: What German producers besides Talla 2XLC do you respect?

Leon: Roger Shah, Pedro del Mar, Kyau&Albert, Ronski Speed, Jam el Mar, Mark Spoon (RIP), Jorn van Deynhoven, Store ‘n Forward, ATB, Paul van Dyk.. the list goes on.

i:Vibes: What are your all-time favourite tracks?

Leon: Energy 52 – Café del Mar
Cygnus X – The Orange Theme
Kamaya Painters – Endless Wave
Sasha vs Junkie XL – Beauty Never Fades
Speedy J – Electric Deluxe
Lemon8 – New York, New York
Solee – Impressed
Above & Beyond – No One On Earth (Gabriel & Dresden Remix)
Armin van Buuren – Clear Blue Moon
Tiesto – Magik Journey
Ferry Corsten ft. Betsie Larkin – Made Of Love
Paul van Dyk – For An Angel
Storm – Storm
The Age Of Love – The Age Of Love
Jam & Spoon – Stella

Just to name a few…

i:Vibes: What was your most crazy DJ experience?

Leon: Having many fans called on stage when I did a surprise closing set at House Parade Romania. Such an amazing vibe and connection to the crowd! I was just playing in the middle of the crowd, instead of playing for them.

i:Vibes: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Leon: Doing what I love most, and I hope to have taken more steps forward!

i:Vibes: If you were to play your last DJ gig tomorrow, with what track would you end your DJ set?

Leon: Energy 52 – Café Del Mar
