Fresh from the release of their latest collaboration 'Sunrise' on Breathe Music we manage to grab a few words from its creators Andre Visor and Kay Stone...
We've got two for the price of one on the i:Vibes interview table this time with Andre Visor and Kay Stone. They are both very successful producers in their own right but when they come together then create something very special. Proof of that statement can be found in their ‘Something For Your Mind’ record released on Breathe Music back in 2008. It was a record Guiseppe Ottaviani got his hands on and saw it popping into compilations, sets and radio shows the globe over. This past month they came out with the follow up to that in the form of ‘Sunrise’ which got our thumbs up here on i:Vibes with the track being our ‘Tune of the Week’. Perfect time then to knock on the door of it’s creators for a word about the release and a whole lot more.
i:Vibes: Thanks Andre and Kay Stone for taking some time to talk to ivibes. It has been some weeks since the DJ Mag voting 2010 was announced. How were you guys pleased with the top 100 ranking? Armin van Buuren #1 for 4th time and Boy George in the Top 100.
Andre: We are very glad that Armin has become number one for the fourth time. He definitely earns it because he works very hard for his aims and now wins the laurels. The fourth time in a row is a sign shows the continuity. Respect for it from us.
Kay: We are glad very much about that that Armin for the fourth time number one has become. He has earned it because he works absolutely very hard for his purposes and each him hard works harvests sometime the laurels and for the fourth time one after the other a sign is also for absolute continuity. Respect for it from us
i:Vibes: You guys released "Something for your mind" in 2008 which was a great track fuelled by your original mix and the Giuseppe Ottaviani mix. What was the most difficult thing you guys had to do to get this track perfect?
Andre: That is difficult to tell. You cannot go in the studio to write a hit track. It was more in the way that we sat together and gathered our ideas. We produced with regard to the audience and put a great emphasis on the melody and mood of the tune.
Kay: To say hard. One does not sit down in the studio and says now we do sometimes a good number. It was rather in such a way that we have gathered our experiences and have tried to produce not only, but also the important point, like the track comes with the audience, except Eight did not leave and fun we also wanted to have of course. You know the result
i:Vibes: What makes the duo Visior/Kay Stone so unique and who does what in the studio?
Andre: Andre is the one who brings up most ideas and I am the one who realizes these ideas. As we get along very well we have much fun in the studio. Maybe that’s why the resulting tracks are very unique.
Kay: As we have already mentioned, we have virtually thrown together our experiences and also that we get by humanely really together. This fun originates at the work and then a lot becomes easier.
i:Vibes: After "Something for your mind" what was your focus going into the making of "Sunrise"?
Andre: We simply wanted to do something that reminds us of our roots. A long break that gives you the creeps was our main aim. Additionally we wanted it to sound different from others. Of course, that takes time but it was worth it.
Kay: We simply wanted to do something what reminds us a little of our roots. A long break where the creeps also appealed by Armin come. Bring out just a track which sounds in such a way, we did not want like 100 others, this. Of course something so time needs, but it has been worthwhile. We are happy as it runs
i:Vibes: Breathe label is one that doesn´t release quantity, but high quality. Did you guys have much pressure going into the studio going to make the new track "Sunrise"
Andre: Breathe Music is like a family. The label takes very much care of their artists and we are absolutely free there in our activities and actions. Certainly quality comes first, but we can tune everything with the label because they are not only label managers but also producers. This is very important for a good cooperation.
Kay: Breathe Music is a family. The label takes care very much of the artists and we are absolutely free there in our activities and action. Clear quality comes first, but the great is that we can tune everything with the label because there just not only people are who do contracts, but also real musicians who promote an artist. This is quite important for a good collaboration
i:Vibes: What was your inspiration behind the track "Sunrise"? Did you just go into the studio and sort of fool around with sounds or does this track have a special story behind it?
Andre: Actually we did sort of fool around with sounds but we kept in mind to do something classical in a modern way.
Kay: As we have already said, we wanted to do a little back our roots and also something what sounds different than many things at the market, this was quite important to us.
i:Vibes: Armin van Buuren gave the trance world "Shivers" in 2005 and did you guys get Shivers when you heard that "Sunrise" was chosen Tune of the week on his show A State of Trance?
Andre: This was really first-class. We were very happy about it. It also was the confirmation that we are on the right way.
Kay: This was really quite first-class. We have been glad very much about it. It also was at the same time a confirmation that we are on the right way.
i:Vibes: What was the most difficult part of getting "Sunrise" perfect in the studio?
Andre: The finish took a lot of time because many different sounds had to be mixed together. More than in other tracks produced before.
Kay: Sometimes one cannot say at all really. It is days in the studio, there goes everything and then there is days, there does not go really a lot.
i:Vibes: Did you guys have more or less the same duty on making the track like with "Something on my mind" or did something change in the studio with the producing of this track?
Andre: We worked together in the same way as before. There are just a few new synths in our studio to play around with.
Kay: We try our ideas, it every single one has to bring together and to let originate from it a little bit. Whether this sounds now like one older track of us is second-rate first. It is important that it likes us both and we have fun in the work
i:Vibes: The melody in "Sunrise" is very very breathtaking. Does it get harder with every new melodic trance track made to come up with a new original melody? Was this a difficult task or did that super special melody pop into your heads?
Andre: It is probably not more difficult than it was at any time. The main precondition is that you feel good at producing. As we are having fun working together that melody did pop into our heads.
Kay: Earlier there were often very long breaks in a lot of trance tracks. We wanted to do something like that simply sometimes again. To have a good feeling, there virtually originates a time trip. Not to sound furthermore like somebody else, but simply in such a way, as only we find it good.
i:Vibes: When you guys listen to "Sunrise" where do you imagine yourself being? Coming out of Space in Ibiza or just waking up in the morning and looking out your window and seeing the perfect sunrise?
Andre: It suits both. We certainly love the combination of Trance, summer, sun and Ibiza. This all means a lot of emotion and influenced us very much during the production of the track.
Kay: A little bit from both. Who likes trance, Ibiza may, summer, the sun, etc. trance signifies for us also emotions and feeling and this was also a point of view which was important to us and which we have tried to advance in the track
i:Vibes: Ronski Speed, Sequentia, Jens Lonnberg and Dark Moon have had remix duty. How pleased are you with the remixes and how do they differ from one another?
Andre: We are very content with the mixes. Each artist has an individual style and made a totally different interpretation. Ronski Speed mix is very powerful; Sequentia is very modern and more grooving. Dark Moon and Jens Lonnberg interpreted it in a more progressive melodic way.
Kay: We are very contented with the mixes. This is the point mentioned just now that Breathe Music is a family. We have tuned together with the label the mix parcel and could introduce our ideas with. To see nice what has come, besides, out.
i:Vibes: You guys also have mixed Selected Trance Volume 2. How much was it mixing the hot Breathe releases and how difficult is it making a mix and selecting the right tracks for the right flow?
Andre: The compilation includes some very unique tracks at different bpm and that was our challenge but together with André who is a very experienced DJ, it was not that difficult to get Selected Trance mixed.
Kay: André hangs up already very long and has already played in many lands of this world, so that we could fall back here also on a good experience. It was important to us, however, with the track choice also that we take many titles of people with whom we have good contact and of course also around the label to support.
i:Vibes: What other releases can we expect from Andre Visior and Kay Stone in the future?
Andre: We are already working on new ideas but it is much too early to talk about. Just wait and get surprised.
Kay: In addition we do not want to say at the moment yet a lot, but what will come very early in 2011, because we already do handicraft in something
i:Vibes: What are your current five favorite tracks?
Andre & Kay: 1. Unknown – Phat giraffe (DarkMoon Rmx.) 2. André Visior & Kay Stone – Sunrise 3. Jens Lonnberg – Last Breath (Activa Rmx.) 4. Talla 2xlc – Shine 2010 (Daniel Kandi Rmx.) 5. Temple One – Feel for you
i:Vibes: What was your summer trance highlight in 2010?
Andre: Definitely the set of Armin van Buuren at this year's Nature One. It showed that trance is still very popular.
Kay: Definitely the set of Armin van Buuren on this year's Nature One. To see nice that, nevertheless, trance still has a certain value in Germany
i:Vibes: Recently guys like Hooligan, DJ Dag, Tom Wax, Talla 2xlc and Taucher played in the Techno Club in Frankfurt. What did each guy mean to you and how important were they for you developing as an artist?
Andre: Many artists are influencing our musical development, i would say that Talla is the most important from the listed above. He and his Technclub are very important for the German trance scene. Andre has been resident at Thechncub for many years. Dag, Hooligan Taucher and also Tom Wax have influenced the German scene a lot and we respect their work.
Kay: They have done everything a lot for electronic music in Germany. For it we give respect.
i:Vibes: If you had an early musical Christmas wish what would it be?
Andre: Chart #1 for Sunrise :)
Thanks for your time and we wish every one a pleasant Christmas time!
Kay: Health is most important in the life. Any more one can also not wish. All other comes from only if it has to go thus his.
We would like to say with pleasure still many thanks to our record company and to all fans outdoors who believe in our music. We are glad about the numerous emails and will answer them also with pleasure. Merry Christmas to all!!!
