© Richard, DurandWe caught up with Richard Durand who has took over the reigns of Black Hole Recordings prestigious 'In Search Of Sunrise' compilation and got his thoughts on pushing forward that epic compilation into a new decade...

When the announcement was made that Tiesto had moved away from the Black Hole Recordings label he had made his home for years and that he would no longer be mixing 'In Search of Sunrise', there were a few question just what was going to happen to the legendary series. One thing was very clear, the series would remain but the only question mark surrounding that was just who would take the baton and keep it going? Enter stage right, a Mr Richard Durand, another Black Hole Recordings artist who has been setting the scene alight with records like ‘Silver Key’, ‘Into Something’ and his superb artist LP ‘Always The Sun’. He has been producing music for many years as far back as 199 under various little known aliases but it has only been since he became more commonly known as Richard Durand that his musical career has taken off. Being Dutch, his real name is one Richard van Schooneveld and as a replacement for the outgoing Tiesto we can’t fault his appointment as the new man to search for the sunrise. We went to find out more.

i:Vibes: Richard thanks for taking some time to talk to iVibes. Have you been able to concentrate on music this month or have you been caught in the 2010 World Cup?

Richard: Haha, the football has definitely had me sat in front of the television more than usual. It’s been really exciting, especially since Holland is still in the running for the cup. If we actually make it through to the final I’m going to go crazy as I’ll be on a plane somewhere during the match.

i:Vibes: What was your first thought as you were asked to mix the legendary In search Of sunrise CD compilation?

Richard: My first thought was “what an honour”. Not long after a second thought hit me: “what a challenge!”

i:Vibes: Did you feel any pressure for mixing this famous CD compilation?

Richard: Without a doubt! The In Search of Sunrise compilation series is legendary. Tiesto left some pretty big shoes to fill so I made sure I gave it my all. I’m really happy with the end result.

i:Vibes: What was your goal as a DJ mixer for In Search Of Sunrise 8?

Richard: I really wanted to make the mix my own but without losing sight of the original concept. Together with the team at Blackhole, I aimed at making this compilation at least as successful as its predecessors. Luckily the fans have been really enthusiastic.

i:Vibes: How difficult was it finding the right tracks and flow for both CDs?

Richard: Haha.. very difficult. Although I did a lot of preselecting in the months leading up to the deadline I received the majority of the promos just a few days before I wanted to start mixing. There was a lot on great productions on offer so I locked myself away for a few days to make my final selection. It was quite a challenge finding the right mix.

i:Vibes: You have made a name for yourself in the last four years. How has your DJ sound developed in this time?

Richard: I think during the course of the last five years my style has probably become a little more relaxed. At the very beginning my focus was mainly on more up tempo music. Now, because I’ve established a name for myself, I can afford to experiment a lot more and play more alternative tracks.

i:Vibes: Why did you choose South Africa as your theme?

Richard: I liked the thought of choosing a country where the trance is relatively small. I was lucky enough to perform there this year and I was absolutely blown away by the people, the landscape and the general ambience the country has on offer. After visiting South Africa choosing a theme was an easy decision to make.

i:Vibes: You started CD1 with the breathtaking “My Sanctuary” by First State. What makes this track so unique in your opinion?

Richard: The track has an amazing build up and fitted really well as an intro. I think the track kind of sums up the general atmosphere of the CD too.

i:Vibes: You have very many unknown artists featured on this compilation. How important was it for you to showcase talent that nobody knows about?

Richard: I really wanted to avoid making a one day fly hit CD so my main goal to select new tracks to incorporate into the mix. Doing so, the compilation has really become a diverse collection of tracks made by famous and less famous artists.

i:Vibes: How difficult is it only featuring two own tracks on a compilation? So often other artists will add and add own productions.

Richard: Haha... Not hard at all, it just saved me a big workload! I really didn’t see the need to include more than two of my own tracks. I didn’t want it becoming a Richard Durand showcase or album.

i:Vibes: You end CD 1 with an own production “For no reason”. What was the most difficult thing that you had to master in the studio to make this track perfect?

Richard: To be honest, I approached producing “For No Reason” in the same was as I would do in any other case.

i:Vibes: What was your goal with CD 2 sound wise?

Richard: I wanted to make the second CD one with a bit more body but without distancing it too much from the first CD. By using different kinds of tracks I tried to keep the mix fresh.

i:Vibes: You have more known artists on CD 2 like Jason Van Wyk and Daniel Wanrooy, but then a very famous artist with BT. I guess its not that simple to make a whole compilation without a few known artists?

Richard: To me it was all about finding the right kind of music that do justice to the In Search of Sunrise legacy. I really tried to just listen to the music without paying attention to the artist that made it. Amongst other things I tried to find the right balance between tracks with female and male vocals.

i:Vibes: What makes the BT track “Emergency” so unique in the eyes of Richard Durand?

Richard: I think everyone will agree that the vocals and melody are beautiful.

i:Vibes: What was your inspiration behind N.Y.C that you produced with JES?

Richard: I was already working on a new production when Jess approached me to work together. She supplied me with some great vocals and I hit the studio to incorporate them into my track. Because I laid out the basis for the track when I was on my way to a booking in New York I fittingly decided to call it N.Y.C. I really loved the end result and decided to use it on ISOS 8.

i:Vibes: “Who Is” from We are is a new Anjunabeats offering from bart claeesen and Raz Nitzan. Is this possibly one of the late summer tracks of 2010?

Richard: The track’s definitly a likely candidate. I’m a big fan.

i:Vibes: Who will reach the 2010 World Cup final and who will win it?

Richard: Haha... what a silly question! Holland will be taking revenge on Germany for the final in 1974 by going home with the cup for the very first time!
