© Cosmic GateOne of the biggest electronic music partnerships from Germany are without a doubt Cosmic Gate who have excelled in recent years both productively and individually. They have just been 'Back to Back' for another time so we thought we would have a quick catch up...

The duo of Cosmic Gate has been setting the electronic scene alight in recent years with some stella releases. They have been producing together un the Cosmic gate banner for over eleven years and are known individually as Claus Terhoeven (Nic Chagall) and Stefan Bossems (Bossi). Claus especially has been excelling with his solo work in recent times under his Nic Chagall aliases but even with the success of that the Cosmic gate partnership remains as strong as ever. Good news to as their productions and mixes are as good as they have ever been in recent times. They have a new compilation out this year which has been out for a month or so now. 'Back To Back' is the name and it’s the fourth in the series of double disc compilation mixes featuring the biggest hits the two talents can muster up. With this interview they bring news of their latest single ‘London’, taken from ’Sign of the Times’ which is out soon with a very strong remix package. Look out for that one coming soon, In the meantime, on with the interrogation.

i:Vibes: Congrats on making the DJ Mag top 20. Only very few German artists have crept into the top 20. Does it hurt that despite this big achievement there is little or no recognition in Germany, because of the less recognizable trance scene?

Cosmic Gate: It would be nice to have a big trance scene in Germany too, but Trance in Clubs is as you said unfortunately not existing here, even as we know there is a lot of people still travelling from here when there is big festivals e.g. in Holland. That’s why we hope this will turn around one day again, as Trance really was big here till the early 2000`s, and we hope it will come back one day!

i:Vibes: It seems like there are artists like Paul van Dyk, ATB or Kyau & Albert who will always have more recognition than a Cosmic Gate despite your much success in the last years. Does that bother you and make you strive to work harder?

Cosmic Gate: There is competition in any genre and we are very satisfied with what we do, being djs and producers, we made our hobby to a profession, that’s why we are lucky guys and will always work hard for our fans in the future!

i:Vibes: Cosmic Gate is back with your well known Back 2 Back 4 CD mix compilation. How much fun is it making this mix and what did Cosmic Gate want to do differently with the Back 2 Back 4 Volume 4 this time?

Cosmic Gate: The production is actually always fun, and we try to build the mix as a long set, starting with more housy and progressive tunes and ending with more harder sounds.

The aim behind B2B is always to give an idea about what sounds we play in our DJ sets, the current music we like, so there is not a big difference to the other volumes, of course the music has changed a lot, and when you listen to the single chapters, it just shows how we evolved as DJs and with many featured own productions also as producers.

i:Vibes: You guys mixed this during your South American tour. How much did South America inspire you to choose the tracks you did and why?

Cosmic Gate: We always say that not only music is inspiring us, its also the travelling we do, people we meet and discussions we have about music or life in general, so of course also the place of Barra in Rio de Janeiro influenced us and took influence on the tracks we chose and also how me mixed it! The weather has been beautiful, we have been overlooking the amazing beach, and we think you can hear that, and we like it a lot!

i:Vibes: You have many known artists featured on CD 1, but then again have unknown artists like Boy Hagemann, Lost Stories or Alex Armes. How important is it for Cosmic Gate to feature these kind of people on Back 2 Back 4?

Cosmic Gate: We do not care about names at all, it’s the music that counts for us! And we think, it’s always good to introduce new talents to our fans.

i:Vibes: The Cosmic Gate remix for Kyau & Albert “I Love you” is very nice. What was the most difficult thing that you had to do to get the remix perfect?

Cosmic Gate: Thank you. Glad to hear that you like it.
Actually we like the stuff our fellow German friends do a lot. It was not hard to do the remix, we enjoyed it a lot and tried to give the original a little more punch. We were happy to deliver back as they delivered a really great Remix for our single Flatline as well!

i:Vibes: What was the goal with the CD2? It seems like you have some more big name artists here?

Cosmic Gate: Like we said before, its absolutely not about names. So it happened by chance that there is more well know names featured here.

i:Vibes: Rank 1 track “the Great Escape2 brings back some memories to “The Awakening”. How important is it in general for certain tracks like this one to have bits and pieces of a time that we all already lived through?

Cosmic Gate: It’s a perfect combination of new beats and basslines, plus bit and peace from the “old” Rank 1 feeling. People simply love that tune when spinning it. So it seems to bring some old memories for the people cannot be wrong at least. We heard it and knew right away we would both use it in our sets and also on B2B4. These guys are simply a perfect example for most perfect production skills that never stand still and manage to put new studio processes in their music!

i:Vibes: What makes your track London rain so unique that keeps getting the fans crazy when hearing it?

Cosmic Gate: Maybe as it’s a very emotional track, because of the strings in the break and the vocals. At least this is how we feel it. It was the first track we produced in the studio for the album Sign Of The Times and now it will be our next single with some new Remixes to be released in a few weeks, watch out for it.
