The first in a series of sequels to come from Lange this year has arrived with the second in his 'Intercity' compilations. As this one takes on a new season it does so a different sound but one that will leave you in anticipation for a hot summer to come...

This summer looks set to be a very busy for legendary internationally acclaimed DJ and producer Lange. Not only have we this compilation, the second in his 'Intercity' series to dig in to we will also have his second artist album coming up in a month or so to! His sequel to his very long awaited original may not have taken as long but its hugely anticipated. 'Better Late Than Never' had the title right for his first venture into an artist LP ten years after his first ever single release. While we, you and the whole dance community have to wait a few weeks to get a sniff at his second offering we have his Spring edition of 'Intercity' to keep us company. He may have missed out a few seasons since his 'Summer' edition which came out, well, last summer surprisingly enough, but that doesn’t matter as Spring has plenty packed in to make up for it. The series takes its name from his very own Intercity radio show which is gathering quite a following and is broadcast twice a month on afterhours.fm. You may find many of the tracks he's been hammering recently on this new double mix as it's a selection of his personal favourites with some exclusive tracks for good measure. Let's get stuck in.

There have been mutterings that the Spring edition of Intercity touched of darker side of the trance spectrum than his earlier summer release. The first track that starts off the compilation does not build up to that pre-conception with Gerry Cueto’s ‘Restart’ being a super smooth melodic gem fir to begin any mix compilation. The whole selection of tracks on the first disc does raise a surprise in some senses, especially with the inclusion of an Organ Donors track. I’d have put them more into the hard dance area but they have popped in with a bit of a curveball with ‘Dr Kaotica’. It’s a track with a deep bass driven grumble but highly touched melody swung over the top. It mixes a sense of dark deep flavour with bright chords and bars, to great effect I may add. One of my favourite records on the first disc follows that with Ummet Ozcan’s rough and tough ‘Next Phase’ which has a huge melody banged through after a short sweet vocal sample. It’s when you get into the mix that you discover a darker mood to things with this compilation, especially with the bass lines. An artist I have not heard before slips possible the best track on the whole compilation for me, Paul Vinitsky’s ‘Fox-Club’ has this powerful cinematic build going off that entices the ear. Quite a talent for the electronic scene if this release is anything to go by and I’m sure Lange would agree. It’s not until the end of the mix here that we see the more uplifting pounding style of trance with Activa, Heatbeat and Simon Patterson rounding off what is a supreme mix by Lange. It might not be Simon’s very latest single but Lange mixed this just before his ‘Taxi’ went out through the promo boxes.

One thing that I’ve noticed with compilations is there does not seem to be the differencing style between the two discs so much anymore. In a way Lange kicks things off on the second disc like he did with the first, pushing in a nicely melodic opener to warm things up with Atem Niblz’s ‘Magic Valley’ getting things underway. There is a difference in the second disc from Lange than the first with him pushing through more tech driven sounds, as evident in Ad Brown’s ‘Vaporized’ drum loops reworked by the Steur Bro’s. One of his very own label stars is up next with his new single. Ben Preston’s ‘This Feeling Inside’ with a take of the house style of things using a string driven rhythm and underlining piano keys. The riff that pounds along Ronski Speed’s ‘Denva’ is really one to be savoured. It makes the main focal point of the track when things filter out and is a track that slips into its surroundings with ease. That’s the quality of a DJ like Lange, he really knows how to thread one track into the other and keep the smooth flow while tweaking the style of sound without it being out of place. The double vocal inclusion of Velvetine’s ‘Safe’ and Beat Service’s ‘Hiding To Nothing’ fit together like bread and butter. They break up the middle of the disc and out some vocal emotion through the mix before things start to drive into an electro direction. Lange’s latest track installs some sweeping harmony along with the tech surrounding it with that percussion so familiar to his own unique sound. It wouldn’t be a mix compilation without a Sander van Doorn track; he’s on fire at the moment. ‘Daisy’ is the choice from Lange to drive into a classy uplifting affair from Ron van den Beuken with the atmospheric ‘Her Tears’. Great melody and uplifting feel to the final track on what is a very mixed bunch thrown together in perfect harmony by Lange.

It's no surprise that this made Mixmag's 'Compilation of the Month' for their may issue, no back handers necessary as this one did it by merit. It’s fresh trance music with a sharp and dark edge in places from Lange, who proves his worth yet again with another essential dose of audio. Spring has never sounded so good; all we have to wait for now is his new artist LP. We’re going to be in for a treat with it I’m sure!
