The latest quality slice from trance label Intuition Recordings is a two track release from up and coming producer, Ørjan Nilsen...

:: Orjan - Arctic Globe / Prison Break
:: Intuition Recordings
:: INTU905

A: Arctic Globe

This is the kind of trance that you should've come to expect from Intuition by now. The track possesses a full bodied and well produced sound. After the initial (and very excitingly executed) snare roll / climax right near the start, this strong sound is over-emphasised a little bit because it takes a while for the track to develop a lot. The beginning is a fairly slowly paced progression with a few teasing hints of synth in the background. Mind you, the punchy kick and enticing rolling bass certainly keeps the boredom at bay. On into the breakdown and things start to happen. The melody finally starts to break through and eventually you hear the end result, initially in a desolate kind of eerie and ambient passage. This reminds me slightly of Menno de Jong's excellent 'Tundra'. Lots of nice atmosphere - it works really well. The melody itself fits into the track and its surroundings very snugly indeed. The synth that plays it has a clear and pretty unique sound - it has a slightly eerie edge to it also which is suiting to the production as a whole, as well as its title. The whole thing also has a very Jonas Steur-like feel to it. A top trancer which shouldn't be overlooked.

B: Prison Break
'Prison Break' feels very different to 'Arctic Globe' - it seems deeper and a little less pacey. I must admit I overlooked it a bit as I was quite taken with its A-side counterpart. However, this too is a little trance gem in its own right. Once the track gets going it demonstrates a thick and energetic bassline, which actually reminds me of a much older tune from around 2002 called 'Icarus' by Flutlicht (which was coincidentally also on a blue vinyl, as is 'Prison Break'). The first sections and a small initial breakdown are used to establish the track's sound and also bring in a soothing set of chords played by a typically summery synth in the style of which many people will recognise from tracks by the Filterheadz and E-Craig. Eventually this quite mellow yet determined track hits a trancey, ambient breakdown, which is where the lead melody comes in. It is played by a prominent sawtooth style instrument, quite raw and simple in some ways. The melody line though is pretty lengthy and it weaves and meanders around the track in an idle and dreamy way, but never loses purpose or focus. It has a strong storytelling essence, if you like. You feel the full effect of this melody and the summery chord progression after the track drops back in. Basically, this is a dreamy piece of delightful trance.

Conclusion:
Another fine release from Intuition, who're definitely concentrating on quality, not quantity, which is a very good thing indeed, as the sheer excellence of this release goes to show.
