In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the lengendary Hacienda Peter Hook digs out the acid house classics for a two disc mix of records that time will never forget...

For anyone interested in the history of house music and clubs that were responsible for offering the clubber a sanctuary from the world to delve into another one will have come across the Hacienda. It was the biggest club in the UK back in the late 80's and 90's and setup by Factory Records and New Order back in 1982. It fast became the place to be for clubbers in and around Manchester with acts like Madonna, New Order and the Stone Roses performing there. The most well known style of music will have been House, particularly the acid variety that the likes of Sasha, Mike Pickering and Graeme Park blasted out until the late hours. The well documented drug, crime and crazy goings on at the club were to be its downfall but by the time it closed its doors in 1997 it had already penned its place in history.

Through Peter Hook the name lives on and this compilation has some of the classic records that used to set the place alight back in the day. It is 25 years since the first tune was played at the legendary club but its coming back this year with a select few nights around the UK to mark the occasion. It may, as Peter Hook put it, be the most popular it's ever been in this current day of age but it goes to show the Hacienda lives on in the hearts and minds of the dance music public. I'm sure there are a lot of folk who can recall a good night at the club, which got torn down and replaced with flats in more recent years.

13: Esctasy Club – Jesus Loves The Acid

For me this compilation puts together music that I have never comes across if it were not for clubs like the Hacienda. Old House music is where all today’s beats and styles can trace their roots from and although it’s been a few years since these records first saw the daylight they still sound fresh and full of energy. The classic riffs, keys, melodies and beats were sounds at the time that blew you away! While I was sipping mountain drew and watching WCW, sweaty clubbers intoxicated on their substance of choice were knocking out crazy shapes to this classic audio.

It's a very good compilation by Peter Hook who has hand picked all these records from the thousands of classics that have not seen the light of day for some time. He's slipped in the better known acid beats of Josh Wink, Mr Fingers, Bassheads, Mr Lee and A Guy Called Gerald with the more underground beats of Victor Romeo and Ralphi Rosario. The full range of acid house is on show here from the jacking style, piano kicks right into the full of acid riffs that mess with your mind.

From a DJ mix point of view when I discovered this was mixed by Peter Hook I had my concerns. If you've ever comes across his extravagant nature behind the decks on your travels or seen the rather dodgy YouTube videos of him pretending to mix a set together without changing the CD then you would be a little concerned about the transition on here from one track to the next. Thankfully though, I think he's been brushing up on his skills and found the cross faders as he's thrown these two mixes together very nicely. The only grumbled I'd have is both mixes are a little on the short side at just over 50 minutes each they leave you gagging for more.

Conclusion:
Essential audio for every dance music fan passionate about house that’s for sure! It's a great album with records that go down in dance history as true classics. Peter Hook is a real legend and this compilation goes to show he still has a keen ear for good music.
