This second volume of the Quest For Trance series has big shoes to fill after the awesome first set of CDs. This time it's Riley & Durrant in control and, as the tracklist shows, they've certainly done their homework in order to select some really decent stuff. Add to this the usual selection of unique and unreleased material included and you're already onto a winner.

Straight from the trance duo themselves, this is what they had to say about their vision for the compilation: "With this album we really wanted to showcase what we see as the new sound of trance. It’s the first time we’ve mixed a compilation CD so we wanted to try and squeeze in a wide spectrum of the worlds best new dance music. Trance should be the feeling or state of mind that a record puts you into – so for us, this can cover a really broad range of music. In 2006 dance music has really come back together as one big community, with DJs playing much more varied sets. We can turn up to clubs anywhere in the world now and start off with some tough electro house moving into the more melodic uplifting stuff and finishing off with banging techno. Taking the people on a musical trip is what trance is all about, and we hope to have captured this on Quest For Trance."

The first CD, the 'Synth Quest', is naturally the trancier of the two CDs. It kicks off at a nice mellow pace with soft and almost funky feel. Things soon get all tranced up though, taking a small trip through a couple of vocal tracks first, but soon the uplifting melodies are coming in thick and fast. Quality tunes on this disc include Ronald van gelderen - This Way, Temple 1 - Silent Nature, O'Callaghan & Kearney - Exactly and Above & Beyond - Can't Sleep.

The second CD is the 'Tek Quest'. This CD, instead of diving right into the techy type trance you'd expect, it actually starts off in quite a dirty, electro house style. Tracks from Kobbe & Austin Leeds, the Plump DJs, Phatzoo and Marco V make a strong initial electro impression. Six tracks in though, the tech trance filters through and things go in a much more expected direction. Infact, it really does take off and some of these classy tracks are quite tough, which is very nice indeed. That's not all though, towards the end the tracks return to being a little more trancey and melodic, which results in a fantastically varied and excellently progressed disc. Quality picks from this one have to be Armin van Buuren - Control Freak, Mac & Mac - Listen, Bart Claessen - When Morning Comes, Arizona Vs. Suzy Slar - Samurai and the awesome 'Rogue' by Re:Locate.

As far as the mixing goes, it's very well executed. Some of it is relatively simple though - there isn't any trickery or anything. Some of the mixes also sound a little 'forced', but again these are performed well, so nothing sounds out of place. The package is finished off with some rather attractive artwork/photography and splashed in bright red, to grab attention.

Conclusion:
Another top CD, so the Quest For Trance series seems to be really hotting up now as both volumes have been top drawer stuff. I'm not quite convinced this is 'the new sound of trance' though - it just seems like, well, today's trance. But it's bloody good, and that's all that matters now isn't it.
