Stephano Greppi is one of Italy's most talented and indeed extremely creative DJ/producers at the moment. His passion for technology helps him to constantly evolve his sound and musical style, always staying on the cutting edge of genres and opening up new musical avenues of underground house music to all around him. Greppi receives a lot of support from big names in the industry such as Danny Tenaglia, Anthony Pappa and Sander Klienenberg. The renowned Renaissance label also backs Greppi, which in itself is a sought after accolade.
This un-mixed, 10 track album features a lot of Greppi's own work. 6 of the 10 tracks are original Greppi productions, whilst the remaining 4 are Greppi remixes. The result is an artist album with a twist - in a way, it's a showcase of even more of his skills, styles and abilities than a straight forward artist album would have been.
One thing to notice here is the track lengths. House music tracks are usually a little shorter than other styles and genres, usually coming in at say 5 or 6 minutes. Here though, the average length of the track, I reckon, is about 8 minutes. And that's a lot of long tracks, easily filling up the CD! This is interesting though, because this allows each track to take you on a much more detailed micro-journey than is possible for shorter, more standard tracks.
Most of the tracks here are chunky and bassy, full of rhythm and smooth, flowing sounds. We're talking something along the lines of almost ambient, progressive house. There's no funk, which I think is a great benefit here, just really nice and interesting sounds. Another element which features in the vast majority of the tracks is the presence and use of vocals. These parts may be sung, spoken or just heavily sampled and creatively used, it's all good stuff though.
Things do get a bit weird at track 8, where you can hear some really out of the box stuff with 'Living In A Video' and track 10, 'Freedom Is', is also very different, but this is used to close the album up, which I think works nicely too.
Conclusion:
This album has definitely opened my eyes to the sometimes unknown and unnoticed world of underground house. Stefano Greppi has an excellent style and great abilities which are clearly demonstrated here. Definitely worth a listen, even if you're not a 100% house music fan.
