This bank holiday weekend seas the return of Tall 2XlC's legendary Technoclub night in the heart of Frankfurt. Leon Bolier will be heading back to play once more and we caught up for a word before the heads onto the decks...
The Technoclub returns this Bank Holiday weekend with a very special night the launch the 39th edition of its long standing mix compilation. It’s the sound track to one of the scenes longest running and respected trance nights. It’s been a Frankfurt resident for over two decades and currently resides inside the surrounds of club Monza. For the launch of the new album Talla 2XLC has enlisted the help of Leon Bolier, one of the scenes biggest talents with a rich history of stunning trance tracks. He’s had two artist albums so far but work on a third will have to wait until later this year. As he lets slip in this interview he’s concentrated on knocking out the killer singles for the best part of this summer. He may well even treat you to some on the 2nd June, this Saturday, as he steps into the Technoclub once again. We caught up for a word before he does.
i:Vibes: 2012 is almost half over. What has been your coolest experience in the club and in the studio so far this year?
Leon: I have played quite a few great gigs this year, ranging from for example Mardi Grass Massive Salt Lake City, ASOT550 Kiev & Den Bosch to small parties like a great yacht party in Miami during WMC and so on. In the studio I have been trying to perfect my sound production wise with harder hitting bass drums and new production techniques, hearing that pays off gives me so much satisfaction.i:Vibes: You will be returning to the Technoclub in June. What was your memory of your gig last year with Temple One? Leon: I loved playing Technoclub last year, great crowd and atmosphere.i:Vibes: What kind of DJ set can one await from you? Leon: A banging club set!i:Vibes: You have mixed the Technoclub volume 39 with Talla 2XLC. What was your first reaction when hearing that he had chosen you? Leon: Of course I heard of the Technoclub series so I was up for mixing a CD straight away!i:Vibes: Do you have any Technolcub compilations from back in the day in your collection? Leon: Yes, a couple.i:Vibes: What can we await from your mix on the Technoclub Volume 39 on disk 2? Leon: It’s a cross section of the music I both play on radio and during my live gigs nowadays.i:Vibes: What was your inspiration behind the track Kiev? Leon: I wanted to make a nice intro for my ASOT 550 set, with a piano and strings build up which leads into a hard hitting club track - and that's exactly what it is now. I played it at ASOT550 Kiev for the first time, hence the track title.i:Vibes: 'Me' is also on the CD. What was the most difficult thing that you had to get done on this track to make it perfect for you? Leon: The drops - I made the bass drum using different synth layers, it needed to be as big as possible whilst saving room for the other elements in the track. The hardest part of making tracks like this is to make those drops stand out.i:Vibes: You produced belmonts revenge with Cliff Coenraad. What was it like working with him on the track and what were the duties in the studio? Leon: I have worked with Cliff before; he's a great producer and the duties in the studio weren’t quite clear. It was just four hands working on one track all the time.i:Vibes: You also have been working with Marcus Schossow. What can we await from this track? Leon: That track isn’t finished yet but we have the ideas lined up - it got a great warm chord progression with a big analogue old school sounding lead melody - which we will blend with modern beats.i:Vibes: A new Streamlined compilation will be released this summer. What surprises can we await from you on this disk? Leon: I didn’t know about that? I released a Streamlined compilation last fall, but at the moment I am concentrating on producing big singles first.i:Vibes: You recently played at Godskitchen. What kind of an experience was this for you? Leon: It's always nice to play at Godskitchen, last time was no exception.i:Vibes: A few months ago, you played at a State of Trance 500 in South Africa. How was this experience for you and could you gather any new musical inspirations there? Leon: ASOT 500 was last year Nevertheless, South Africa was a great experience, I have played there before and after, it's a great country to visit. The ASOT gigs over there were massive. Hence I named one of my singles 'Cape Town' after premiering that track in South Africa.i:Vibes: Shimamoto was picked up for Corstens countdown 200. How do you feel getting recognized for that with your music? Leon: Stuff like that always is a compliment! So of course I am happy about that.i:Vibes: In 2010 came Phantasma. What is the latest on a follow up album? Leon: I will be starting to work on a new artist album soon, but at the moment I am, as I said, concentrating on firing a range of big singles at the audience.i:Vibes: What new remixes and tracks can one expect from you in the next months? Leon: I am currently finishing the follow up for my single ME, and there's a collab coming up with Alex Kenji (he did 'Pressure' last year with Nadia Ali & Starkillers) which will be promoted during the summer - since it is a perfect summer tune. Last week I got asked to do a collab with a big USA EDM name which I am very excited about. We will see what happens!i:Vibes: Who will be the up and coming artist in 2012? Leon: Julian Jordani:Vibes: If you could be any other DJ for one night who would you chose? Leon: Sasha - I love the music he plays but most DJs won't 'get away' with playing as deep as he does. He draws his own audience and can play this kinda stuff - and his crowds go nuts.
