The first snippet from Paul van Dyk's forthcoming artist album has landed with his first full EP for quite a while 'Verano'. He's not alone in the making of this one as he drafted in a familiar friend in Austin Leeds...
It’s been a while since Paul van Dyk last released a full single EP. When he does though it can mean only one thing, an album is shortly to follow. His brand new release on VANDIT is no exception to the rule as he’s due a new artist album in March called ‘Evolution’. It’s an album that should have been released last year but after a bit of a rethink the PvD team put it back to this year, looking to launch the new album with a video concept in mind for each single. They really do push the boat out with Paul van Dyk albums with limited edition EP’s and DVD’s available with the new release. The first single to evolve from the album is the one we have here, ‘Verano’, with Austin Leeds.
:: PvD's Berlin Mix :: PvD's Evolution Mix :: PvD's Full Fire Mix
While Paul likes to promote the ‘Electronic Music’ banner these days his club productions whether he likes or not are still trance. Not all three mixes in here could be classed as that though but as with most productions these days other styles creep into the sound. He’s greased up three very different mixes here depending on your mood. The Austin Leeds influence is very prominent within the ‘Evolution’ mix having a deep housey vibe, dipping the BPM a little under 140 focusing on bass driven melodies. The monotone sounding acid riff is one that will catch you ear in here., then a bright energetic melody will light up what starts off a dark sounding tune. Paul takes things a little deeper with the bass line on his ‘Berlin Mix’, it’s a real riipper, doused in effects and beefed up with some serious percussion and beats. It’s banging, aggressive but retains the bright, sparkling melody providing the uplift.
For the ultimate Paul van Dyk banging sound look no further than his ‘Full Fire Mix’ which notches up the BPM’s a little. It’s a trademark sound from Paul but one which I remember discussion with Miles one night that seems to lack creativity. It works though, with great uplifting qualities when the main break hits. Melodies overlay and the main riff does all the work. Not a vocal in sight to ruin this one! When the beat drops back over the melody you’re waiting for that little more uplift and in part it does come, but the main hook for me is the leading and fading riff that makes you tap your feet. If you’ve heard his remix of ‘The Hurts - Sunday’ track you might be forgiven you’ve just put that one on as the sound is very similar.
Conclusion:
Here we have three very different mixes to get stuck into here with Paul offering a glimpse into what to expect with his new artist album. I wouldn’t say it tears up the speakers but it's a very enjoyable tune with that banging Paul van Dyk sound on full show. I'd pencil the Berlin mix as my pick out of the bunch here.
