Would you be able to tell the difference between a real pair of Pioneer HDJ's and a fake one after shelling out a good hundred pounds worth of your English pennys? Without knowing what to look for I would suggest not. Set up by Sentric Digital, 'Fakes Cost More' is a social media blog looking at the state of counterfeit copies of popular saleable items word wide from phones to golf clubs. This past week they have been look at headphones and have a rather enlightening article up outlining the huge market that is counterfeit goods. Their latest focus is on headphones and if you take a trip to the Fakes Cost more blog you can find a whole archive of information on how to spot a fake pair from a real pair.

The world is being filled with a rapidly increasing volume and range of counterfeit goods. Everything from golf clubs to guitars, phones to pharmaceuticals are being counterfeited with the dangers of such items becoming more apparent to users across the globe. The internet is awash with stories, recollections and discussions about the experiences of users who have fallen foul of fake products.

We draw together some of those conversations on Fakes Cost More, a new blog and social media project. We want to encourage engagement with the issues at a grass roots level, veering slightly away from the more traditional path of exposing secondary and tertiary effects of counterfeiting such as the use of child labour, poor working conditions and the distribution of profits into other organised criminal activities and focusing on the primary concerns expressed by people...the products they purchased and the effects such products will have, and have had, directly upon them.

Our research looks at everything from retailers’ guides to avoiding buying fake products to videos and articles of people who have unintentionally purchased the product. News sites, blogs, video hosting portals and many more types of mediums all crop up in the case study research we have created. We look at the global picture, with the western world studied just as intently as the Far East.

We have focused on specific products for eleven case studies; each split into resources, news stories, discussions and videos on the topics. The case studies are bearings, computers, golf clubs, guitars, hair straighteners, headphones, make-up, mobile phones and pharmaceuticals.
