© Tom WaxIt's a very special night this week for Technoclub as they welcome back Tom Wax behind the very famous decks erected by Talla 2XLC many years ago. It's his first appearence since 1999 from one of Germany's biggest dance legends...

Germany has been host to some of electronic dance music’s most influential artists and producers over the past three decades. All music genres very much well catered for to. One of those iconic names who built his reputation up on the streets of Germany and is still as passionate about dance music today as he was way back in 1988 when he first started spinning the black vinyl’s is Tom Wax. He has been through the developing sound of electronic music over years and has been responsible for some of the records that shape today’s sound found within electronic dance music. Having been involved in the business for well over 22 years this Friday he returns to a club which shares legendary status along with himself. The Technoclub is very proud to welcome back after eleven years Tom Wax, who’s new found style of house and techno together with a blend of pure trance classics will set Talla’s club on fire. We caught up for a few words from a true electronic music icon before he lays down his first tune of the night.

i:Vibes: On November 6th, you will play in the Technoclub. Do you remember the last time that you played there?

Tom: My last time was the X-Mas Event @ Dorian Gray in 1999 and I unfortunately missed the final closing event on New Years Eve, because I played a huge gig in Las Vegas! From my point of view the Dorian Gray in Frankfurt Airport always was the perfect home for Technoclub.

i:Vibes: What kind of set can we await from you? Will you play some of your very old trance classics from the 90s?

Tom: and Andy Düx were the more real Techno influenced DJ´s of the Technoclub Resident jocks and that’s why I will play a well selected mixture of
classic techno tunes and some serious trance classics.

i:Vibes: Do you remember the first time that you met Talla 2XLC? How was that first meeting with him?

Tom: We met of course on a Friday @ Dorian Gray Technoclub introduced by Andy Düx who gave me the chance to play as his warm up DJ. I knew him just through his music productions as Moskwa TV or Bigod 20 and we spoke the same language - electronic music!

i:Vibes: How important has Talla 2XLC been for EDM?

Tom: Talla and Sven Väth were the forefront of electronic dance music in Frankfurt and maybe in the whole world. Talla started his Technoclub back in 1982 where nobody could even imagine the impact this music would have in the future. He believed in this music and installed his own labels Zoth Ommog, New Zone,Suck
Me Plasma,Tetsuo and Influence and gave other artists a platform for their productions. My respect for that courage in the early days.

i:Vibes: How sad were you in 2000 when it was announced that the Dorian Gray would close its doors? What was your nicest memory of the Dorian Gray?

Tom: Dorian Gray was my home and I grew up there as a personality and DJ. The sound system and the atmosphere were unique there and I still miss it a lot. The night when Andy Düx played my first production ever in his DJ set on a Friday night @ Technoclub in 1991 was a real blast and will never forget that special moment.

i:Vibes: Do you remember the first time that you met Hooligan, DJ Dag and Taucher and what made them so important to the German dance scene?

Tom: I met DJ Dag of course at Dorian Gary in the early 90s, because he was the DJ for the Sunday mornings there and the whole staff of the club was a little family.

Taucher was well know for his special appearances at Sven Väth´s Omen Club and later he started DJing, when we met at the legendary M-Club in Mainz around 1992. Together with Hooligan I played a lot of gigs @ Poison Club in Düsseldorf and many other events in the Ruhr area, but I can’t remember when we first crushed into each other. We all lived our dream and gave our musical input to the electronic music scene. Everyone in his own musical style to archive a place in the history books of the music we love.

i:Vibes: You started to DJ in 1988. You came from Darmstadt. Did you ever have an encounter with Torsten Fenslau. You came to Harthouse in 1992. Was there any particular reason why you never released on Abfahrt?

Tom: I just met Torsten once on a Friday night @ Dorian Gary, but we just spoke a few words and never met again. Abfahrt didn’t release the kind of music that I produced in those days and that’s why I first released on Andy Düx Overdrive imprint (Microbots) and later on Sven Väth´s Harthouse label (Arpeggiators), but later in 2000 I had the honour to remix Tyrell Corp - Running, a Torsten Fenslau production, that is one of my all time favourites. Nowadays I’m good friend with Torsten´s brother Frank, who is one of the heads of Superstar Recordings.

i:Vibes: What do you think will music fans remember from your legendary project Arpegiators?

Tom: The legendary tunes "Freedom Of Expression" , "Express Yourself", "X-Plain The Un-X-Plained" and "Discover Your Innerself" as well as our live performances with our singer Maike in front of the stage.

i:Vibes: You became A&R for Harthouse/EYE Q in 1992. You were responsoble for much of this incredible music being released. Do you have an answer why such incredible music was being released on this label between 92-96?

Tom: Frankfurt was well know for the trance sound and after the first releases on Eye Q and Harthouse by the likes of Sven Väth, Ralf Hildebeutel, Matthias Hoffmann and Steffen Britzke and their projects Barbarella, Metal Master, Cygnus X, Brainchild and Odysee of Noises a lot of people copied their sound and offered their tracks to Eye Q and Harthouse. I got tons of demo tapes in those days and we could cherry-pick the massive tunes.

i:Vibes: How did the 1995 hit "It’s our Future" change your life?

Tom: From Germany to the rest of the world.

i:Vibes: How would an "It’s our future" 2010 sound like if you were to go back into the studio an make a new version?

Tom: I don’t know yet, but I thought about a re-release maybe in 2011. As soon as I have the right idea for a new version it will happen.

i:Vibes: You started your Phuture Wax label in 1995. How much of an impact did this label have on the German dance scene in the 90s?

Tom: It was my personal platform for me and other artists to release their productions without any musical restrictions. I supported my DJ and producer friends like Norman (Terry Lee Brown Jr.), Frank (The Timewriter) and Jan (Jan Jacarta) with releases of their productions on Phuture Wax. The sound was always international and had much better sales outside of Germany which brought a huge reputation in the whole wide world.

i:Vibes: You had the pleasure of mixing the Technoclub Volume 2 in 1998 with Talla 2XLC. What was your nicest memory with this experience?

Tom: The production of the exclusive tune "NRG" for the compilation with Talla and his co-producer Vernon was a funny experience together in the studio and it was the first media central charts entry for Talla.

i:Vibes: You have been producing for 20 years now. Do you have an estimation of how many tracks that you have released in your producing career?

Tom: This is a question that I asked myself a few weeks ago and I checked the GEMA for that - I have 350 musical works that are registered on my name there, but not included are all the uncountable remixes and other productions I did in the last 20 years.

i:Vibes: You worked a very long time with Thorsten Adler. Why did the cooperation between you work so well in the studio?

Tom: It was a great synergy between the two of us - we started doing music during our last 2 years at school after visiting a lot of great nights at Dorian Gary & Omen in Frankfurt. Thorsten had great musical skills and I delivered the clubby aspects with my DJ experience.

i:Vibes: Since 2002, you have been working with Boris Alexander. How has your sound developed since you started working together with him?

Tom: At present I work with different friends in my Phuture Wax soundlab. Boris Alexander is another long time friend and former school buddy and he lives close to my studio, why we decided to produce together. Next to his writing for the BEAT magazine he stops by at my house and we do some emotional techno stuff together. With Alex Stadler I do some

House productions as well as with Ian Oliver. Together with my radio buddy Franksen I produce a lot of Tech-House stuff and soon our longplayer "Full House" will hit the stores.

i:Vibes: In 2007, you received the special honour of performing Dvorak’s 9th symphony together with the symphonic orchestra of the Hessicher Rundfunk under star conductor Parvo Järvi live and to a sold out house, underlying the classical composition with electronic beats. How much has classical music been an inspiration all through your life as an artist?

Tom: I have never been into classical music, because my parents just listened to ABBA and Boney M. when I was young. I think this special performance was the first time in my life that I discovered the beauty of classical compositions as well as the incredible sound of a symphonic orchestra - it was a blast and an inspiration!

i:Vibes: In 2008, you released a new label "Do pretty girls dance". What was your focus behind this label?

Tom: This is the platform for Boris Alexander and me to release our productions as fast as possible!

i:Vibes: You are about to release the Tribal Tech EP. How has the early feedback been?

Tom: Yeah together with Franksen this EP will be out Mid November on Amused Records and the reactions are great - massive feedback by Mastiksoul, Ante Perry, Jacuzzi Boys and others. We had a lot of releases together this year on labels like Suara, BCB Tec, Komm Mit Musik, Salted Music US and more new stuff will be out soon ...

i:Vibes: If you could be locked away in the studio with any artist who would it be?

Tom: I would like to learn from Trevor Horn how to make a perfect music production and I would love to record a song with Dave Gahan or Martin Gore.

i:Vibes: What are your five all-time favourite tracks?

Tom: 1.) Art of Noise - All trax
2.) Depeche Mode - All trax
3.) William Orbit - Strange Cargo
4.) All Trevor Horn Productions
5.) Massive Attack - Blue Lines + Protection LP

i:Vibes: Is there anything that you would have liked to have done in your music career that you haven’t done yet?

Tom: A worldwide number one chart track that everybody would rate as outstanding.

i:Vibes: If you could play one last track in your last DJ set, what would it be? Maybe "Its our future"?

Tom: No it would be The Art Of Noise - Close To The Edit, because this is the track that inspired me to dedicate my life to electronic music!
