Nitrous Oxide. The highly acclaimed trance heavyweight producer from Poland has just dropped his debut artist album. It features a swathe of new material and a sprinkle of reworked classics and is sailing your way right now on none other than the Anjunabeats label...
Krzysztof Prętkiewicz aka Nitrous Oxide hails from Poznan, Poland. Influenced by the electronic music of the early 90's, his passion evolved and everything came together when music production technology became available on the home computer later that decade.
In 2003 he teamed up with Kamil Bigaj to form the 3rd Moon project and was responsible for the incredible 'Moon Breeze'. Krzysztof's later solo work leaned towards the more progressive and melodic side of trance and so the Nitrous Oxide project was born. His fantastic productions were picked up by Armin van Buuren and more importantly, Above & Beyond, who signed him to their Anjunabeats record label.
Ever since, N20 has been putting out a steady flow of top quality productions, balancing trancey energy with the most uplifting and sublime melodies. This brings us to today where I found his brand new debut artist album, 'Dreamcatcher', sitting in my inbox, the tracklisting for which looks something like this:
01 Alderaan 02 North Pole (Album Edit) 03 Mirror's Edge 04 Follow You Feat. Aneym 05 Muriwai 06 Blurry Motion 07 Downforce 08 Come Into My World feat. Sean Ryan 09 Dreamcatcher 10 Far Away Feat. Aneym 11 Endorphine 12 Supra 13 Amnesia (Chill Out Mix)
The album kicks off with 'Alderaan', a beautiful ambient piece driven by soothing chords and a spine tinglingly good piano melody. What would be amazing would be to see this one turned into a Club Mix where it would most certainly absolutely demolish the trancefloors out there.
Next up is one which should be familiar... 'North Pole' is one of the first N2O tracks I became familiar with and its kick ass melody still delivers today. It's been revamped for this album, with some more detail added to the soundscape and a proper groovy bassline. Delicious!
'Mirror's Edge' is a style I've not heard from N2O before. It's deep and techy with a massive, grinding baseline. There are melodic hints within the breakdown and towards the end, creating a unique, blended style. Indeed an album highlight! 'Follow You' is a simple vocal affair which doesn't break any new ground, but is still pleasant and will appeal to the vocal fans.
'Muriwai' is interesting. Almost like a proof of concept track, it demonstrates his impressive ability to form a truly atmospheric soundscape, apply melody and layer in an ambient/breakbeat crossover. No joke, this is awe-inspiring music. Continuing with the diversification of styles, 'Blurry Motion' has that distinct elec-trance sound which N2O seems to have got to grips with very quickly. Again, he makes it his own with some chopped by vocals and his trademark synthlines.
'Downforce' and 'Come into my World' are standard N20 affairs, but the latter features a powerful male vocal element which has a really broad range and is worth a lot of attention. It helps transform this production no end.
'Dreamcatcher', the title track, is again trademark Nitrous Oxide. It carries strength, has impact, delivers the melody where it matters and provides all the uplifting goodness that quality trance should. It also reminds me somewhat of Super8 & Tab's style and sound.
'Far Away' is light, vocal breakbeat. It's nice, but I wasn't expecting it and I'm not sure it fits 100% into the flow of the album. The final run of the album sees 'Endorphine' deliver energy via a simple mechanism but with near-on infinite finesse. Another example of N2O's stunning talent in a smoooooth, flowing surge. 'Supra' is a calmer style featuring electro-basses and chopped up vocals, again very Super-Tab like. The closing track is a welcome return of an old favourite. 'Amnesia' in a beautiful chill out incarnation. Stunning tune and a great way to close off this amazing showcase of talent!
Now, where are the singles release dates...? :-)
