The latest bomb from Pharmacy Records has dropped through the door with a collaboration between two artists I'm not instantly familiar but I’ll explain just why inside. Fred Numf provides the remix in here...
Pharmacy is the home of Christopher Lawrence with this the 6th release for his label. He is one of the biggest DJ's in America and rightly so with his last two records being personal favourites of mine. It's natural that anything new from his label always gets the ears pricking up a bit. It's a collaboration between two artists I'll admit to knowing very little about until a little bit of digging revealed the man behind the Italian sounding Ricardo Luiagi is in fact Fred Numf himself. He's a name I'm sure you will all know from his 'Universal Language' compilations and single in that name release a few years ago on Black Hole Recordings. His partner in crime for this one is Alvin Dorsey who has worked with Fred before but has not had any big single releases to highlight.

The Original Mix may well have you in two minds on first inspection but once your get your head into it should make sense. I'll explain what I mean by that. There was something in here that just didn't click with me at first. The record’s quite quirky in sound when it gets into the business end with a big thundering lead hook that leads into a bright sparkly melody. In the lead on here the shuffle in the kicks add a nice touch and energy in building things up with panning sweeps shifting from left to right in the speaker. The main melody in here is loud but for sound s like its missing an effect or ot as you get the impression its just not been polished to that sizzling shine to get it to stand out.
The Dub mix however is a different kettle of fish. Not a lot has changed from the original but its gone gritty and cuts out the strange melody that put a dampener on the original. The beat is hard and the opening sequence remain the same with a short build then an explosion of leading riff and shuffling kicks dropping from the beat. Where the main quirky melody came in on the original comes a full up passionate electric melody that shifts up a gear from the lead riff that's been setting it up. The beat drops for a slight second leaving it buzzing along and its the kind of big sound that destroys speaker cones. Building sweeps that flicker out and repeat until they peak feed in around the back of the track adding energising depth. At first I thought the dub was just the original but a shorter version but I was wrong, the dub is the real muscle in here.
The Fred Numf Vs. 50 Remix I think improves on both the mixes here with a slight electro edge on the sound. The beat is deep and firm from the start with a slighting different mood from the on start. The leading riff that opens things up early works on the lower bass tones with an aggressive edge feeding in a chord changing string that develops the main melody that’s in the original but toned down a bit here. It's been given that extra treatment it deserves and has an edge in here to catch your ear's attention. Right at the heart of the track is where the best highlight drops with a electro bubbling deep string that changes tone at the right moments.
Conclusion:
I did not know what to think about this one at first with the Original mix's main sound missing something I feel. The dub takes the right approach with a superb remix from Fred Numf. This one is for those who like it tough, deep and a touch of electro bubbling under the surface.
