The latest instalment on the quality tech label Oxygen Recordings is a new project from the man everyone is watching right now, Sander van Doorn. This new record is being supported across the board by almost every big name out there...
Anything I've seen with Sander's name on it has oozed quality and the same goes for the Oxygen label in general. Needless to say I was excited to hear this new track once I found out who was behind it!
:: Purple Haze - Adrenaline / Push Off Me :: Oxygen Recordings :: OX006
A: Adrenaline 'Adrenaline' is held together by a foundation of strong, thumping beats and an incredibly comprehensive array of percussive sounds and instruments. The nicest elements of the track is a deep and thick bass which begins to grow quite soon after the track has started. It plays a somewhat melodic pattern which sounds and feels strong, moody and intense, giving the tracks tonnes of atmospheric presence. During the break, this melodic pattern is used to build and grow a more lead oriented synth which pushes out the same melody but in harsh, rasping synth tones, contrasting excellently with the smooth, thick sounding basses. This is an awesome demonstration of Sander's awareness when it comes to producing tracks - every noise, every sample has a purpose which it is made to carry out. Another fantastic deep, techy production from SvD, and another top tune Oxygen can add to its growing catalogue.
B: Push Off Me Time for a total change in flavour and style on the flip side of this vinyl! What we have here is breakbeat all the way. I was quite (nicely!) surprised at what I was hearing when I put this on. The beat pattern for this track is nice and solid and its complemented by a nice range of percussion which sits nicely on top of the beats. The most noticeable element of this track though is the grinding and twisted bass notes that pulsate in and out of the beats - a really dirty, underarm sound that'll make a dancefloor groove all over the place. The final touches to this track include a techy-come-ambient breakdown and a cool sounding vocal which sounds like its coming in over a radio of some kind. This works well because it keeps to the rough, raw feel the track itself exudes. Something fresh and unexpected!
Conclusion:
'Adrenaline' is a great track. It has a really strong sound and the bass driven melody is fresh, good to listen to and generally fantastic. 'Push Off Me' is a solid breakbeat track which can't be faulted.
