He's remixed Solar Stone, Midway, Indiana and even a personal remix of Paul van Dyk's "Autumn", he has come out of nowhere to become one of the stars of the UK Trance scene. Here's what he has to say...
Greg Murray's Profile
Greg Murray has been one of the names which has popped up time and time again in 2003 with some superb remixes for Hooj offshoot Lost Language, including that of Solar Stone's "Solarcoaster" and also Midway's "Monkey Forest".
i:Vibes: Alot of us out here don't know much about you, so how about give us the lowdown as to where you're from, your background, music influences and such?
Greg MurrayWell, I'm from Leeds in the UK. I started out in music back in '95 when I started teaching myself how to play the guitar. I eventually bought a PC to record the music I was making but it was around the time of the trance explosion in '99 and I fell in love with trance music, ditched the guitar and as they say 'the rest is history'. My main influences still stem from those great tracks back in '99, I try to give my own tracks the same feel and energy and bring back the good old days.
i:Vibes: You caught UK DJ Graham Gold's eye a little while ago and since then you've been remixing left right and center. How has it been since he signed your upcoming remix of Corderoy's "Sweetest Dreams" to his Relative label?
Greg MurrayGraham is a great guy and has always supported my music from the first demo I sent him, I have a lot to thank him for. Graham put me in touch with Platipus soon after he signed 'Sweetest Dreams' and they offered me a remix of a track called “Indiana - In My Veins”, which became my first ever release. But up until recently I have only had success and interest from my remixes, so from that point on I realised that remixing was the best way to get my name out there. So instead of chasing record deals for my own track I started chasing remixes instead.
i:Vibes: You've had a few remixes under your belt so far, including the recent one of Solar Stone's "Solarcoaster" and Midway's "Monkey Forest", as well as a few upcoming remixes. How about a brief on what remixes are set to be forthcoming from yourself?
Greg MurrayOther than the one's you have mentioned coming up on Lost Language and Relative/Tsunami, I have two others I am able to mention. The first is an older remix of a track called 'Lost Cities - Nightrider' which is coming out on a small UK independent called 'Collision UK'. The second is a track called 'Bliss - Stars' which I have remixed for a publishing company called' Sound Assault Music' (www.sound-assault.com) I am working for them as an in-house producer and general A&R guy.
i:Vibes: How about in terms of your own productions in the near future including your collaborations with Christian Rusch ("Lost Cities" as well as "Epic") and Jurgen Solander on "Touched"
Greg MurrayA few weeks ago I was lucky enough to meet up with Rich Mowatt from Solar Stone, we had a bit of a chat and he was saying how I should start to spend more time doing my own tracks rather than remixes. A week later Elef Tsiroudis (Plastic Angel) was telling me exactly the same thing! Every time I do a remix I use up ideas that I could be using on my own tracks. So I have started making more time for my own material. The tracks I have done with Christian Rusch are getting a lot of interest and we had an offer today to sign 'Epic' and believe me when I tell you it's a very exciting label! Other upcoming collaborations I'm involved include people such as Tom Lindley (one third of Goldenscan), Miika Kuisma (AR52), Jurgen Solander, Mark Wiggins (Lost Cities) and my newset project is with my good friend Thomas Bronzwaer which is almost finished and it sounds amazing.
i:Vibes: With your production style compared as being something to a cross between producers afar as DJ Tiesto, Ferry Corsten to George Acosta. How would you define or categorize your own music?
Greg MurrayI personally define my music as a combination of both uplifting and progressive trance. Particularly my new solo productions have a lot of progressive elements but still very energetic.
i:Vibes: Any DJs / Producers being major influences on your work?
Greg MurrayArmin Van Burren has always been the biggest influence on the way I hear dance music. He's a great DJ and producer.
i:Vibes: You have gigs upcoming in Washington DC, and at Peach in Camden (UK), are you going to focus on expanding the DJ front?
Greg MurrayI have been a dj for a long time, but producing music has always been the priority for me. So my DJing has taken a back seat. But this year I want to move out of the studio and feel the buzz of playing out my own tracks. I have started remixing tracks purely for my own DJing purposes, for example, Christian and I have just remixed 'PvD - Autumn' and I am in talks with Lost Language and Hooj Choons for a remix of 'Lost Tribe - Gamesmaster'. When I do play out I play about 50% my own material, whether it's remixes, collaborations or solo projects.
i:Vibes: Software or Hardware?
Greg MurraySoftware! There is no comparison.
i:Vibes: Top tracks in your box at the moment?
Greg MurrayUnknown Source - Force of nature Inzite - Twisted Reality AR52 - Hibernation/Timegate (Greg Murray Remix) Bliss - Stars (Greg Murray Remix) Hiver and Hammer - 5 Million Miles Young Parisians - You Write the Rules (Solar Stone remix) Mirco De Govia - Things that matter
i:Vibes: Your opinions on digital media (mp3s, etc) and its potential benefits?
Greg MurrayThere isn't enough space to answer that one, sorry.
i:Vibes: If you could buy 1 thing in the world with a hundred thousand dollars, what would it be?
Greg MurrayA house.
i:Vibes: Advice you want to pass onto our readers out there?
Greg MurrayKeep doing what your doing and don't change your style or sound in an attempt to make something someone else wants.
Cheers Greg!
