For atmospheric pads...
an analog or a sample playback VSTi synth
absynth is nice, ANY I MEAN ANY ANALOG SYNTH (freeware or not)
z3ta+ does good work, its not realy an analog
the whole Korg Legacy Collection does GREAT job for making pads, its hard to set 3 synths simultaneously, but the result is great...
the best solution is a saple playback synth that can load more than one samples and play them all together...
For Leads Malstrom sucks and its not even analog!
Leads need your best synth...
so Vanguard, impOSCar, Novation V-Station (sometimes) and many more, most of the times i use Vanguard...
for bass
Vanguard or Beast, Synapse Orion Junglist does great job too (some freeware like Synth 1, do great job not only as bass synths)
for piano an for samle based pads i use Atmosphere and Korg Wavestation VSTi
as drumsynth i use Attack, RMIV and microTonic (now only RMIV)
as sample based drum mashine i use N.I. Battery
for sliced drum samples i use N.I. Intakt
as a sampler i use N.I. Kontakt

For pads nothing beats Spectrasonics Atmosphere VST. With its 3gb core library and all, nothing compares to it.
Leads I still like my good ole NI Pro-53.
Bass I like the Novation Bass Station.
Drums = NI Battery hands down.
Sampler I still like NNXT
