Post subject: New to Electronic scene, What are the essentials? |
|
|
| Hi everyone, Im relatively new to the electronic scene and I am taking a strong liking to Trance espically. I've looked around in the Top 10 post to see some of the essential tracks and had some success with that. Any recommedations on tracks to get? And also perhaps some advice on how to become more involved with the Trance social scene.

Trance, as most electronic music is, lives on vinyl singles. That being said, there are some Dj's who have put together some great mix sets on disc that are well worth checking out. 3 good ones to start of with would be Tiësto's Nyana, Ferry Corsten's Mixed Live, and Armin van Buuren's A State of Trance 2004. You should be able to find those on amazon.com or wherever you normally buy cd's. The dj's are the real stars of this genre, and the producers generally don't get as much credit... Those 3 names I've just listed are probably 3 of the most famous trance dj's around, and they've also had notable success as producers. Paul van Dyk, Mauro Picotto, Marco V, Johan Gielen, Nick Warren, and Judge Jules are some other huge names. Dj's like Paul Oakenfold, John Digweed, and Sasha were all huge in breaking the trance sound but have moved on to other things since.
www.thedjlist.com is a good site for learning about dj's.

| Well I do have means to play vinyl on my setup at home so I wouldnt let the fact that the majority of trance tracks are on vinyl get in my way. Im pretty fimilar with Paul Oakenfold, Armin van Burren, DJ Tiesto, BT and a few other DJs however I'm not so knowledgable about the indivuals composers which make up a large portion of these DJs mixes. Thanks for the guidance.

Well, than you're already on your way.
Vinyls are expensive, and you'll usually have to end up importing them, which adds up the cost. www.juno.co.uk is a good spot to keep astride of the new plastic. The reviews that get posted here of vinyls are a good guide to new stuff, we've got pretty current stuff. There's 3-4 other ones I've been meaning to review now....

Yea, check out radio sets and live sets from some of the names mentioned and you'll find more tracks than you thought possible ... good way to find what style you like also!

I already mentioned Ferry.
and ATB hasn't had a good track since 9 Pm ('til I Come), and even that was only really bearable when remixed by other people. (the Signum mix comes to mind) He's pretty cheese.

Here's a link to a short introduction to trance I did a while ago. It might help.
