Post subject: R n B finally dying!! :) |

According to reports, RnB & Hiphop is declining in popularity... Unfortunatly however, Rock and such genres are gaining popularity.
However in Ireland, the closest thing to Trance that is getting more popular is commercial dance...
Not looking good...
Even though im looking forward to Planet Love which is all techno, trance and the like. Hopefully PVD will be there this year again...

There is some decent rap/hip-hop around, but as usual you generally have to look beyond what is in the charts to find it.

glad to hear the hip hop genre isnt selling/coming across aswell as it used to be, well, i really dont mind, cant say i pay attention to it at all.
i like some rock/indie stuff - more the newer mod/indie stuff but trance is my favourite in all its different styles.

I'd love to see the terrible shit on the top 40 charts that they try and pass off as "hip-hop" die out, but real hip-hop music is just like trance, it will never be accepted by the masses and there will always be credible artists putting out beautiful works of art consistently. Artists like The Roots, Mos Def, GZA, etc. -- please don't confuse this with the tripe you get inundated with when you turn on the TV or the radio.

people.. ya gotta realise this is a world-wide phenomena.... even in china and other asian countries; we're not spared the merciless onslaught of cheap cheezy 'rnb' and 'hiphop' tunes... i hear, a big percentage of the clubs over at beijing, plays nothing but top 40 tunes and 'rnb'.
enter the mtv generation.

Yuh, tru dat... on the worldwide thang... you ever heard Korean rappers? In Japan, the local brand of R 'n' B is HUUUGE... and they have people like Utada Hikaru to thank for that. I like her stuff, her producers don't get credited as much as they should but it's brilliantly done.
RnB ain't what it used to be decades ago though. Now, over the same instrumental music beds, it's "RnB" when you're singing and "Hiphop" when you're rapping. Some people will try to argue their way out of this one, and yes, there are certainly exceptions, but they only serve to prove the general rule. Bonus points: syncopate the beats a little with some swing, add a little toasting and maybe even a "bo selecta", and you've got... UK Garidge! w00h00
I mean, how does that even make sense?

Its a form of music that just seems to get more popular and more popular.
The radio is still full of it and the clubs just keep on spinning it, doubt the slowdown has arrived yet and if it ever will.

There are too many people around who buy music because it's fashionable rather than because they think it's worth the asking price. Ergo anything sells.

My friend gave me a list of songs he wanted me to burn for him on a CD and all but two or three songs were rap - commerical rap. Nelly, 50 Cent, Eminem, ect. And he says I have no musical taste...

The key wordthere is fashionable -- trendy, in other words. DJ Sammy is trendy so it sold and people who didn't know any better called it trance, when most of the people on this board would be offended to put that in the same category as an artist like Dumonde, for example. But that doesn't mean that Dumonde will ever be accepted by billions of people worldwide becuz it gets pushed on the radio. I don't defend artists like Nelly or 50 Cent, I absolutely abhore those artists, but they sell becuz they're fashionable. The "good stuff" will remain untouched by those who don't know any better, the same as quality trance music. There is beautiful, meaningful trance music that we can all connect with, and then there's bullshit. Same goes with hip-hop. This is an art and a culture that will never die, it's so deep-rooted in culture for those who are avid listeners, but it'll also continue to be bogged down by terrible see-through shells of what that culture is really about. Exactly the same with electronica.

good point. i remember having this debate with my mates after a session on shrooms. we came to similar conclusions that with every genre there is the shit and the underground. the shit is deemed the norm for outsiders of that genre who dont know better (ie like cheese is viewed by many to be what trance is etc) and if you are really intp that genre then will u know what the good stuff actually is.

It doesn't seem that Rap and RnB are in any decline where i am and everyone still loves it as much as they do. Most types of music tend to go thru a phase where it's popular. Hopefully this cRap is coming to an end

R'N'B and Hip Hop are HUGE! in North America and I don't see them dying anytime soon, it seems to grow. Every store sells hip hop style, playing hip hop music in the background, hip hop clothes. They sell it to white kids and they make a shitload of money.

dude, that's not gonna happen, even white people raps there in your country. the popularity of r&b there competes with boy bands, which the type of music they both produce blends with each other.

Hey guys!
You don't know how happy I would be if that whole rap/hip-hop/rnb scene died in the arse big time! It's such a fake scene. Almost everyone who is into it is a try hard. On top of this, the lyrics are utter shit. All they do is come up with different ways of saying:
1. Pop dat muthafuka
2. Fuk dem hoes
3. I don't need no man
Wot a *beep* of shit! I hate it. Made by losers (50cent, eminem, snoop, dr dre etc) for losers.

That is pure ignorance. Don't you get mad when someone says they don't like "techno" becuz it all sounds the same and none of it is original, none of it has any feeling to it? How many times have you had to defend trance music becuz people who don't know what they're talking about trash it?
It's a fake scene, made by and for losers, the lyrics are shit?
"Activism -- attackin' the system, blacks and latins in prison, numbers in prison stay lackin' in vision, shit, and all they got is rappin' to listen to, I let 'em know that we missin' you, the love is unconditional, even when the condition is critical, when the livin' is miserable, your position is pivotal, I ain't bullshittin' you, now why would I lie, just go to get by? The TV got us reachin' for stars, not the ones between Venus & Mars, but the ones that be readin' for parts, saturday sinners on sunday morning at the feet of the Father, they need something to rely on, we get high on all types of drug, when all we really need is love."
Nothing but popping glocks and pimping hoes though, right?
For every lyric that you can cite that you hear on the radio about some bullshit, I can quote you 3 that deal with meaningful, socially conscious issues. Bob Marley? He calls them redemption songs. The type of songs and lyrics that you're thinking of will NEVER outweigh the songs that display the true essence of hip-hop, you just don't hear those songs in your everyday life becuz they don't market songs about overcoming struggle and fighting the social ills of the day to 14 year old kids who buy cd's at Wal-Mart.

Haha You too eh, shrooms are wonderful things for making what should be obvious suddenly become clear!
There are loads of great people out there loving good music in all styles, but there are a hell of a lot of spods out there who just like the processed cheese that TV and radio squeezes into their eager yapping mouths.
One of my friends was massively into trance and house, and gave me a kind of guided tour through the really good stuff, and I loved it. But now, trying to find anything decent on my own without knowing any people who are similarly intense about trance / house is nigh on impossible and I find myself wading thigh deep in processed cheese and seeing only the occasional glimmer of the good stuff on the far horizon Which is one reason I joined up here.
But, knowing that differentiation exists still doesn't seem to make it any easier to meet just the groovy ones with taste....
For the record though, I hate R'n'B. Dull and uninspired warbling as far as I've been able to determine (I do occasionally linger for a few minutes on the R'n'B radio station just to make sure I do hate it, and yes, I still do). I'd be pleased to see it wriggling and squirming, spewing it's final emissions into the dirt before fulfilling it's destiny, death and the realisation that it was just another cultural evolutionary cul-de-sac. Hip-hop has it's good bits, but not enough to make me want to bother with it to any great extent.
Phil
