Post subject: The Streets / Dry Your Eyes -- legal hassle |
|
|
"A man has claimed parts of THE STREETS’ ’DRY YOUR EYES’ are similar to an obscure track he released last year.
Michael Gagliano claims in an interview with The Sun newspaper that the score from Mike Skinner’s new single is similar to his own ’Yesterday And Today Pt1’, released under the name Epic last year.
Gagliano currently earns his living in a Beatles tribute band.
He claimed: "I’m not taking legal action yet but I’ve signed a publishing deal with US label Rainbow and will be looking into the question of getting royalties from The Streets. To be honest, the money isn’t an issue for me, I got into this game for the women. I would be happy if The Streets would give me the acknowledgment I deserve and credit me on the sleevenotes for the record."

Mike Skinner claims to have taken the offending riff from a sample CD that he purchased a few years ago. I'm asuming there would be no case to answer if he knew the name of the sample CD so it could be traced. Therefore if he is telling the truth I still don't feel sorry for him because he should have been more careful.

Not a fan of it at all. Just seems to be midless ramblings with a few slow beats in. Not my cup of tea.

I was actually after comments specifically about this incident rather than whether people like the song or not.
But for the record I don't like it. The singing in the chorus is painful!

If Mike Skinner actually had any talent whatsoever, he'd write his own music instead of taking it from a 'sample cd'. And I use the term 'music' in it's absolutely loosest definition, since it's not really music at all. 'White noise' describes The Streets quite well, I feel

Um, Mike Skinner has made some of the freshest new rap productions in a while. Its a pretty staid genre and hes produced some great tracks, although as an MC he is pretty bad.
Do you understand how rap works? Virtually all the beats are sampled. If he took part of it from a sample CD thats certainlly a lot better than a lot of the blatant theft shitty artists like Nelly get away with on a regular basis.

| No, I don't understand how rap works, and never want to as I absolutely detest it. The only reason I even know what this 'song' is is because radio 1 play it about 20 times an hour while I'm at work.

Exactly! I was listening to some Todd Edwards today and thinking about that... That man is a master sampler.
Anyhow, there is good rap out there. It just doesn't get any commerical appreciation. Groups like Jurassic 5 (okay, they get some commerical attention), The Roots, The People Under the Stairs, Akrobatik, et. al. would be examples of good rap. Anyhow, what am I blabbing about, this is a trance forum.
Back on topic, its my opinion that this guys just mooching off of someone elses success. Happens just as often if not more often than a true talent having his work stolen by someone who goes on to find critical acclaim and commerical success.
