Well, not alot of programs for musicproduction are free, so i think you are shit out of luck on that.

The program that I use, and find to be extremelly nice to work with, is of course Reason 2.5 (www.propellerheads.se)

IŽll cost ya a bit of money, but this is a great starting program for producers. If you know what you are doing this program can be everything you will ever need (Swedish trance artist Airbase made for example "Genie", and remixes of Solar Stone, Above & Beyond & Double N with Reason only)
If you later on want to expand and maybe get Cubase SX, then you can just use Reason and Cubase in rewire mode, where they will work together. For that you need a gooood computer tho, because running Cubase and Reason 2.5 at the same time, possible with some powerful VSTi, is a sure way to overload your CPU.

Anyways, check the URL above, and D/L the demo of Reason 2.5. The demo is not restricted in any way, except for the fact that it quits after 20 mins, and u cant save anything in it. There are a couple of Demo songs that follow the demo. If you want to produce Trance, then take a closer look on "Unknown Source - Realization".

Trance_Allstar,
My computer I'll be taking to college with me next year is a Dell laptop Insiprion 9100.
Specs:
P4, 2.8 mghz, 512 RAM, 64mb ATI Raedon Graphics Chip

Will that be enough to handle Reason or, preferably, Reason and Cubase SX at the same time?

FL Studio. Easy to learn, and HIGHLY expandable. Don't believe anyone who tells you that it's a Toy, because they are full of crap. I know a few professionals who use it (The also use other VSTis) but everything can be done in FL Studio (maybe with some other fx, but the compatability is there).

Agreed, but you can't produce "real trance"with it; it's more dancy IMO! Rolling Eyes

Reason is very powerfull no doubt, but stand alone does not have very good quality.

i sugest you to start working with Cubase SX Version 2 and reason in rewire slave mode, cubase is the easyest sequencer out there.Wink

to begin your creation you need a good synth, a nice (the best for trance and not only) synth is Access Virus C (rack) you need a controler to play with it or ION from Alesis, if you dont want or cant buy a hardware synth you can use use Vanguard from reFX http://www.refx.net/ its the best soft synth i found, but not too clasic for real analog sounds, for original analog VA synth try PRO-53 of native instruments (NA), for sampler i use Kontakt of NA, as a drum mashine i use NI Battery, and for drum synth you must have MicroTonic (available only for PC) http://www.soniccharge.com/ , Steinbergs Attack is a very good drum synth too, you have to find some good samples to work with Battery, go to a shop an by a sample CD with trance samples and loops, use ReCycle to make the tempo of your loops variable (rx2), and use a mastering program like Wavelab (steinberg) to fix the sound of your tracks.

i dont realy like FL but Citrus is great, FL is a very chip host for VSTi's but not so stable and with FL you havent the possibility to record audio.

you must have a controler too to be able to play music, M-Audio has some solutions for controling software check them out http://www.m-audio.com/

hope my post helped you.

Oh! you are gona need a sound card too, if youll end up with a laptop (PC or Mac) you can use M-Audio Ozone as a usb audio card too.

Wink

Reason is a very easy and flexible software to start with and get the point

That's true, but with programs like Reason and Cubase it's possible to create a whole production without adding something from hardware stuff. If you want to edit your tracks I recommend Acoustica; that's a great prog! Cool Wink

yah compoutermusic sequencer is nice,
a very good analog VA freeware synth (maybe the best) that emulates the Nord Lead machine is Synth1, maybe the best freeware analog soft synth, get it here http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-SanJose/5005/softsynth/synth1.zip
you can get good extras (banks) for this software here http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-SanJose/5005/softsynth/Synth1ExtraBanksPackage.zip

some companies have one plugin VSTi for free like reFX, has Claw, ist good for basslines and has super quality, but not too analog sound http://www.refx.net/downloads/Claw/Claw_1.0.zip

PSP is one of my favourite companies for VST fx, has some freeware versions too www.pspaudioware.com/ check them out.

in this site youll find some very good VST fx made by a guy called Sascha Eversmeier, the compressor he has is great and all of them are free http://www.digitalfishphones.com/main.php

an other free compressor http://www.dehaupt.com/SynthEdit/dhcomp1.htm

a pack with some good plugins like flager, modulator etc. http://www.bojo.dk/productfree.html

here youll find great FX too http://klanglabs.siliconemusic.com/

izotope vinyl is a prog that emulates the vinyl (crats crats) sound to your tracks http://www.geocities.com/freevst/vinylsetup.zip useless but free

LinPlug FreeAlpha is a lite free version of LinPlug Alpha, linplug is one of the best music software companies i know get it here http://www.linplug4.com/CD/PC%20Free/FreeAlphaInstaller.exe
it comes with a helpfull pdf manual http://www.linplug4.com/CD/Manuals/AlphaManual.pdf

and here youll find some good virtual analog soft synths http://www.funkelectric.com/~*beep*/ try "Satyr"
download all of them! Morpheus is a nice sampler... Confused its OK, hey its free!

Greetings Twisted Evil

thats truth, to begin make some tracks with FL or Reason to understand how the synth works, how the sequencer works etc., ask some friends, find a music technology forum, and try to learn how to use a proper sequencer, find out whats better for you, thats what i did some years ago Wink
