What are the most "hearable" differences between trance, techno and house?

Takes time and you gain an ear for it eventually.

Yes i agree! After years of intense listening, you can finally hear the difference between Britney Spears and Adam Beyer for example...

I always think of it this way: Trance is melodic, techno is similar to trance but lacks the extreme melodies and breakdowns, etc. House is similar to trance but slower and a little more bland, but is good to listen to for slowish dancing or doing work etc.

To me techno is more about drums and the beat than trance. Techno just seems darker, even than hard trance, because even hard trance has serious melody going on. As for house, throws hands up in confusion. House is a mystery.

Just an instinctive thing once you have listend to a few tracks from each genre. I never get too faffy about sub genres, just as you say, techno, house and trance.
Good thing to do if your have no idea and are staring out, litsen to a few sets from DJ's from each genre to get a feel of the type and style of tracks those genre's have.

it's been of late that the lines between house, trance and techno been blurring out. even more so when DJs out there mishmashing tracks of different genres into their set. it's all when done well... i go crazy when i hear a breaks track right in the middle of nowhere and get dropped in properly with a good trance track.
