CNet acquires MP3.com and shuts it down

Vivendi Universal have been the owner of MP3.com since 2001. Now they have sold it to CNet Networks who have new plans for this site.

Cnet downloads have been free since I don't know when. They make their money and hopefully they will respect mp3.com as a viable outlet to a lot of upcoming musicians. I don't see why they would need to make changes but I REALLY hope those changes will be for the better. If not, I think cnet will definately be getting plenty of complaints...

Mayby they will create the site like their downloads.com page, offering free samples to music with the option to buy.

Shame to see mp3.com go as it was a great place for artists get get their music out, not many people know of any similar music sites, I know I dont.

I know all about mp3.com because a teacher that taught a computers class at schoo, well his nephew was not the brightest kid but he decided to make mp3.com years ago and cashed out with 27 Million Dollars US. Vivendi is taking a big risk with this then again, they were never smart in the first place. Remember their french CEO got them in trouble a few years back with a huge deficit. Frankly another site like it will pop up because people will see opportunity.

Then again vivendi is one of the five major record companies and one that funds the RIAA. You knew it was only a matter of time till they shut it down.

shame to see mp3.com shut down. it had a lot of good music for up and coming musicians and also had a lot of cheezy artists that gave me a big laugh. as someone else said in this forum, i'm sure another company wilil rise up and seize the opportunity or they will just change it to some pay per dl site.

I never liked this place because I could never figure out where the links were to the downloads. However, I realize it's a huge outlet for new artists. I'm sure a lot of them will be mad. I hope that a new site will come up for them soon, or else the RIAA or some other stupid conglomerate will seize even more money away from an artist.

There were lots of good pro and amateur artists like Aura - the source of trance, TranceLab, Yahel, Astral Projections, Infected Mushroom, Goa Syndrome, ect. Really too bad.

I might be biased, but I don't like mp3.com anymore anyway. It was great in the beginning, but then it became way to commercialized and I don't think they focused on the artists anymore after Vivendi took over in 2001. Well, that's why I created my personal mp3.com. It's called deadmurder.com and there is no advertising or anything and has already many dj's on it from all over the world. [/b]
