Let me try:
uplifting is music where the melody is mostly quite easy, and catchy. It bounces up & down, feeling all happy. Long breakdowns a la 'hands in the air'
Progressive: the bass is harder (not faster), and the music sounds 'darker', it has a deeper feeling to the music, and there a lot of different melodies over each other. there are some breakdowns, but those are mostly from a complete different order then the uplifting ones.
uplifting example: ron hagen & pascal m - on stream
progressive: shmuel flash - chilling moments

Very good explaination there. Dont get thiking that because a tune is long in track lenght then it must be prog, an example would be perpetruos Dreamer - the sound of goodbye, very long track but is uplifting trance.
More deeper and sutle is prog, good cd's to check out are the latest in "Transport/Tranceport" as they have become very proggy.

james holden, proggy? hmm personally, i dunno, i think of his style as "whatever the hell he wants to do, at that particular time, if it manages to be prog, then it might be prog, if it isnt, god knows what it is then, its just james holden, and thats good enough for me and thats the way i like it!"
sorry! probably not the the answer you wanted
g&d, hmm more uplifiting? shows what the hell i know :p
timo, maybe a little more proggy house, or techno, like you i never see it as plain prog or trance, but this doesnt mean its not interesting, on the contrary makes a refreshing change and an intersting listen

I would say both James Holden and G&D are prog.
As for the differences:
Prog is slower, and it" progresses" - moves from one sound to another. Takes you on a journey as it has been said by prog fans. There is usually no main melody that you can identify with the song - it's more a general feel.

I slip James Holden more into the House style than trance. G&D are very much 'soft' proggy trance for me.
Timo? Varied style of productions and mixes...I'd slip him into the 'dance' category
