Been a lot of talk about commercial tunes in here over the past week or so.
Most 'commercial' records come in the form of euro pop trance covers and chart released dance records. Commerciail is Milk inc, Flip & Fill, Ian van Dahl, Sash (allthought I like his stuff ), Lasgo, Love inc and the like.
I can see where the confusion lies because even if a tune does well in the charts that does not class it as a commercial tune. Take Paul van Dyk's stuff, not commercial at all in my book and many others but does sell a few in the charts.
Commercial tunes maily driven by money with little passion for the genre of music, more about getting the sales from the 12 year olds.

So what DOES make a tune commerical? It's kind of hard to tell. Well, usually they're short, 3-4 minutes. They have a very poppy feeling. They probably sound just like all the other pop on the radio except instead of using traditional instruments like guitars and drums, they use synthesizers. Typically, they have strong vocals, and the music backs the vocals, rather than most trance which is the other way round.
I completely agree with Dave - I only think a song is commerical if it sounds really commerical and is eurodance-type stuff, ex. DJ Sammy. Stuff like Pulser - Cloudwalking, Gouryella - Ligaya, Ferry Corsten - Punk, and of course PvD's Nothing But You are called commerical by some people, but I don't think they are. They are well-produced trance pieces that are so good, even the typical music listener likes them. NOthing wrong with that, unless it causes the producer to make inferior uality music in the future because they are focussed on chart success rather than making good tracks.

I'm quite a newbie to this whole trance scene. However, I've turned out to be an avid quality-trance fan lately and I definitely don't regret it. I'm in no position to comment about commercial/cheesy productions as I don't have enough knowledge about the musicology, or the description/history of music genres. Anyhow, what I think of commercial music is, they're hardly differentiable from radio chart hits. They lack the underground intensity. On quality trance productions, you can feel the emotions the producer is devoting to the music, instead of trying to make it catchy or groovy.

Commerical trance usually have familiar melodies so listeners think they've already heard the song but in fact they might not
underground trance normaly don't sell out coz people think it's too "common"
