Is the progressive taken over ? I sadly think so. Not that it is bad but I like the good "old" uplifting trance. How about you ?
take care

Well,
Many of the big clubs in Ireland are beginning to play progressive trance and also starting to play some stuff like Timo Maas and stuff.
Its different and I must a ncie change from the "usual" trance which I admit can get boring some times with absolutly awesome tracks becoming fewer and fewer.
The only original stuff now is the hard uplifting trance like dj scot, or the medium hard stuff like Cosmic Gate
Both those artists rock and will bring some awesome tracks in the future I think

I also dislike this change form uplifting to progressive trance. I like harmonic melodies and I think that progressive trance lacks a lot of these... Also I would like to hear a definition of "progressive trance" because I am not 100% sure how to define it.

progressive to me is like sash & digweed and such, i dont like progressive trance that much:( its not bad in my opinion..just kind of boring, and it does not give me the vibe that uplifting trance gives me, to me, since uplifting was first, it will always be my favorite, and in my opinion, best trance. but im afraid your right, prog is taking over... oh well, its probably because all the lil sheep who love to follow all the fads think that prog is the next big thing and they dont want to stick to there roots. but thats just the way i see it.
peace,
-b

Hi there!
I am a trancelover from the very beginning, when trance splitted from Techno like "James Brown is dead" or "Das Boot from U96". It started in my area 1990 with a record Company called "Time Unlimited" which was the first to release Trance in our area. I loved it! It was not compareable to uplifting trance, like it is today (or like it WAS in 1998/99), but I loved these new sounds, nice floating melodies over a kicking and sometimes very soft baseline. Melodies always controlled my life. I cannot imagine life without great melodies. And that is why I don't like this progressive Hype today. Some Progressive tunes really Kick ass, I like to listen to it in Clubs and big Rave Parties, but when an uplifting Trance Track is played, I am totally spaced out! I cannot describe my feelings about uplifting trance correctly - I can only tell you that it is a warm, happy feeling that comes directly out of your heart spreading into your whole body, making you smile and dance in complete Happiness.
1998/99 were definately my years of uplifting Trance, I have never experienced so many great tracks with such a power within them.
But sometimes on a great day, when another "Uplifting Killer" is released, my heart starts to jump again like in those good old times, making me feel like a little happy kid that has to jump up and down in complete joy.
Progressive can't give me that feeling.
stay uplifted!
DYM

I agree, progressive is kinda good for a change... stuff like Vaiio - Rapture is good if you wanna class that as progressive, particularly the Armin van Buuren mix which is totally mindblowing!
My heart is still with uplifting, melodic trance which is sadly slowing down in Australia, where I live they mainly play house/techno/hard trance.
Artists like DJ Tiesto are moving toward progressive but still retaining some elements of uplifting trance in their songs. I know uplifting trance will probably never die but it will definately go through phases.

I love uplifting trance. Some progressive absolutly kicks ass! But most of it is tediously boring.
Anyway if a collective of the best uplifting trance artists got together to work on some new revolution of uplifting trance it would be the greatest thing ever! There is ALWAYS somethign new to do I just think uplifting trance needs to go to its next level and have somethign totally new and amazing...!

I agree with you all.
The progressive stuff is sure has its great sides but its still kinda boring. and the uplifting trance got more and more comrcial in the last years, its like the quality of the uplifting tracks went down....
any way there is still one style of music that never dissapppoints me:
Psy Trance!!
listen to Infected Mushroom for example people, youll feal the pover of Trance Music.
Cya all
p.s. DYM i must agree with you!

Hopefully 2002 will be better than 2001 has been. Maybe even have uplifting on the comeback. I can't wait to hear the new Gouryella track, plus their new album (due in the summer I think). It was tracks like "Gouryella - Gouryella" and "System F - Out of the Blue" that got me onto trance... it was that feeling you get when you listen to uplifiting trance... that tingle in your heart... that was the first time I experienced that feeling, with those tracks. They will always be my favorites.

I dont like dj scots 2 newest mixes they are no good at all even though scot is still my favourite remixer and producer right now.
His last good mix was of that brooklyn bounce track, club bizarre

progressive is taking over, and that's just how it is. we cant stay in the past all the time, music evolves, our taste evolves, so we have other music. and of course, there will always be peeps who prefer the old music.
imo it's a good thing, cuz i love progressive like sasha, digweed, breeder, bedrock, holden, graham, .......

Progressive trance is very good,
Almost all the tracks are good, on the other hand, trance is being overproduced and many many shit songs are released, thats not good,
Thats why I prefer progressive & deep trance, better qualty in general

Hard trance is taking the rule. Sadly, since I love melodic trance. But, I think I'm moving over to hard house/trance....

I hope hard trance takes over. Even though i like uplifting better hard trance is MUCH MUCH better than progressive. Progressive trance puts me to sleep every night. Seriously, i only use progressive to put me to sleep, thats what it does so well. I have NEVER heard a progressive song that didn't make me sleepy. SOmeone tell me one :) Oh and Iio - Rapture (armins mix) sure as hell isn't progressive.

Theres just something about progressive that doesn't seem right. In my opinion "Prograssive sucks!" Uplifting trance has got to be best out of all dance styles but I personnally prefer Hard House when I'm on the bus or walking on the street with my MD player. Its the bass on hard House tracks with gets me going!

dogma, I go to sleep every night using uplifting... so I guess that cancels yours out. I guess progressive would put me to sleep too but mainly because I think its boring.

I guess you could say I like a mixture of uplifting & progressive.... but only some progressive, too much and it either gets boring and / or annoying.
System F - Needlejuice (not needmejuice, lol)
I've heard that one... its mainly progressive and a bit of melodic... a little too progressive for me though. Just about all the other System F stuff is great though (minus Soul on Soul)

i cant believe this board...you guess really dont know what progressive is all about..
when i started listening to trance, it was just epic/uplifting/emotional and so on...it was the best trance, people love and still luv it, even do i...
the thing about progressive is you have to give some time 4 it to kick into u its like when u all say that ITS BORING, that is total bullshit people...u have to understand it, u have to imagine it, u have imagine the unpredictable, its groovy, aggressive at times, dynamic...you see uplifting trance u can predictated whats gonna happen in the tune, with progressive its different first time u hear it, ya i know, sounds boring and shit, i totally believe you guys...my first progressive i ever started to listen was by Digweed...i didn't like it either, was boring as hell, but the thing was i didn't give it a chance...i said fuck this, i want TrAncE! either it was my mood or something, but 1 day i really turned UP the volume on my system, while i was listening to Digweed's GU Hong Kong and believe ivibers, thats when it really kicked in to me...i realized how many different layers, characteristics it has i was like wow! yes i know, progressive tends the be long each track about 7-8 minutes, but thats the beauty of it, because it NEVER builds up, the track within itself just adds more sounds to it...and the bass is very dynamic, changes Digweed wasn't really the first dj/producer that got me into, coz i knew many others, so i decided to buy Nick Warren's GU Amsterdam, and that cd when u hear it is REAL PROGRESSIVE...the kind of progressive what should always sound like....
oki my point, is that if u say that progressive its boring, i totally disagree with u and so other people who listen 2 progressive will say da same thing...just give it a try, it takes a while i know u all heard of Sasha - Xpander, Bedrock - Havent Scent, yes indeed, those r classic progressive tracks...do the same now, listen to it again and dl some other tracks, not by sasha or diggers only, nick warren (way out west)...just dl any recent liveset from nick warren/digweed/dave seman/sasha and listen to it
so remember people just give it a try....
take care

I just haven't been listening to progressive enough then. I suppose I will give it another try... be more leniant with it. If you could recommend, lets say... 2 or 3 livesets and 5 tracks... tell me and I'll download and listen to them. (but if I don't like it, don't be surprised)

like i said peeps, just because even if i gave u some good recommendations right now, that wudn't mean that you wud like it right away ...i know you wudn't because, it takes time to understand it its like, remember when you started to listen to trance...you weren't to sure about and so on...the same thing will be right now with progressive
good livesets
Nick Warren - Essential Mix - 2001, theres only 1 from him this year
Nick Warren - Essential Mix - 99, also 1 from him from that year
John Digweed - Love Parade and Homelands 2001
just some to mention...

Theres always going to be different types of trance, thats what makes it so good, its not one boring sound, whether u like it chilled, progressive, hard, uplifting or a bit of everything, its still there. I'm not so keen on progressive but I like more Harder edged stuff, As long as people keep making all types of trance and good at that, then theres always going to be an audience

I think dj's are slowly moving to hard trance. When I partied down at the Electronic Music Festival, "Machinery", one of the only ones dedicated to electronic music in the whole world, most music that was heard was banging hard trance. I'm a melodic trance producer myself so I only had one or two dj's pleasing my appetite. That's why I gave my cd to a couple of them hehe I think I'm slowly too changing my style more and more harder away from the mainstream. The respect of dj's and the people dancing at raves are starting to mean more to me than people buying records and getting yourself known all over the world which is the main purpose of melodic dance music I think..

well finally someone who thinks and listens further then his nose long is
This guy knows what trance is, many off you only listen to well know songs with a nice uplifting piece in it, these guys just dont know better!
They miss all the value of a good progressive track.
progressive tracks are foremost better in his "whole"
think about that and you will understand, don't only give well know trance a chance, and DONT blame progressive if you dont know anything about it.

and you know why progressive is always a step behind on normal trance, because it isnt commercial in any way.
And for responding on the title of this topic
I HOPE that progressive wont TAKE OVER !!!!
WHY? : because then it will be influenced by media etc... and it will become commercial too
so, plz GOD let progressive dont take over
thats my meaning about it, and I think the meaning off all progressive lovers

damn dawnseeker and blue_neon, i love u guys lol
jk
i love progressive
it's better then uplifting imo, and it's true, i was into uplifting first, listened to that for about 3 years, but now, i prefer progressive, even tho i still listen to uplifting, but not as much as progressive
progressive has much more feelings to it then uplifting (or any other style)
great tracks are
corellian - fanthoms
spooky - bullet (live mix)
james holden - horizons (and everything else he touched)
max graham stuff
sasha - arkham asylum (i cant describe what i felt first time i heard this song)
bedrock - voices, heaven scent
and the list goes on and on
hey dawnseeker, u heard, 2 february there's a party in flanders expo, called trilogy, with a few dj's, like, sasha, diggers, sander kleinenberg, oakenfold, tiesto, ferry, timo maas
i read this yesterday, but havent seen anything official yet, so i'll keep my eyes open for this :)
