Post Post subject: Music New Age - How To it made Reply with quote

The different styles of music manufacturers have different "sounds". We all more or less agree on that point. For example, use Jazz
seventh chords almost exclusively. This, and the type of string
progressions used in Jazz gives it its unique flavor. But what
about new age music? Do you have the ingredients of their own that is special?
Yes it does.

Now, there are no hard and fast rules here, but most
hand, new age music is a consonant music. That is, there
little or noharshness happening in the music. No wailing saxophones
and what not. That said, we can eliminate most of the
tense jazz chords and their voicing. So what's left?
Major and minor chords partially based on the regular scale
modes. Chord progressions are simpler and usually start
in the chord l. No progressions II-V-l here.

What about the melody? In jazz, we have a soloist who usually plays
a large amount of chromatic tones. This is rare in new age music, because
would create a dissonance. New age melodies tend to be softer
and more on the spiritual side. Solos, if any, are not
therefore concerned with the expression of itself as they are
to let the music express. A subtle but important
distinction. Jazz musicians may have some ego invested in their
yield. New age musicians learn to let the music play with them.
They learn to become a channel of the music itself allowing it to
speak through them. Of course, I'm not saying it can not
happens in jazz, but only see a jazz player and see
what I mean.

Last but not least is rhythm. Let's do a comparison / contrast
between Jazz and New Age music. Jazz has a clear discernible
pace. It's what makes Jazz Jazz. New age music can have a
underlying pattern or rhythm of music. Can be used to
create states of trance in the listener. The drums are usually
part of the Jazz music. Percussion is mostly absent from the New
Age sound simply because it would add to the atmosphere
New Age musicians create. The synchronization is very important for the Jazz
musician. The soloist has the freedom to play whatever you want
While maintaining the meter and remains in time. The New Age Music
is more elastic in that the time is there, but not a teacher
the player. The New Age player can disregard the entire time.
Just listen to Zen flute music as a good example.

Now what does all this for the New Age musician candidate? A
couple of good things. This means that a new era defined
"Sound" out there. That is here to stay and that people like
and the need to hear it. And that means that there are some guidelines
out there for what defines the meaning of New Age music
