Post Post subject: Best prog/hard/psy-trance CDs Reply with quote

Lately I've been trying to expabd ny horizions out of the uplifting trance I usually listen to, and I want to at least try to get into the other main genres of trance.
Prog is something I usually don't like... but some I do like, especially James Holden. So any recommendations along those lines would be good.
Hard trance I like, but it's hard to find mix CDs, they're not very well publisized. I particularly like the high-energy trance by Dumonde, S.H.O.K.K., Alphazone, Dave Joy, Mat Silver vs. Tony Burt, ect. But I'd be willing to take a look at anything, as long as it's not super-hard.
As for psy, this is one genre I do enjoy, but mixes and albums are hard to find. I do own Paul Oakenfold - Voyage into Trance which is his goa comp and it is quite good, although I prefer tracks that are more full-on.

So here's your chance to recommend me stuff! Any suggestions welcome.

Jody Wisternoff - Way Out There
Andy Hughes - Altered States vol. 1
Jon Cowan & Mike Hiratzka - Altered States vol. 2
Jerry Bonham - Interpretations 1 and 2
Cass - Interpretations 3
Any TranceGlobalNation CD (if you can't find them in Canada, order them; they are definately worth it)
Noel Sanger - Summerbreeze 2
Jerry Bonham - Vers 1
Max Graham - Shine
Max Graham - Transport 4
Dave Ralph - Tranceport 2
Dave Ralph - Naturalized
Dave Ralph - Resident Alien
Sandra Collins - Tranceport 3
Parks & Wilson - Painting on Silence
Ashley Casselle - Response
Joshua Ryan - By Design

Most of those are on the lighter side of Prog; a lot more melody, not so much of the "boring" elements.

I don't really know too much about Hard or Psy/Goa Trance, to be honest, but good luck with them.

How about the Balance CDs, particularly Holden's; are they good? Something else I was wondering about were some of Oakenfold's older CDs - Great Wall and the like. One more series I was curious about is the Global Underground ones.

I'm a fan; most of them are quite a bit darker than Holden's, but they're all very decent compilations; I'm a fan of Bill Hamel's myself.

Great Wall was mediocre at best; not really a bad CD, but I already had most of the tunes on it when I purchased it.

The Global Underground series has jumped around a lot; the first one is pretty much a Hard House CD, whereas Nick Warren's follow-up was very trancey. Dave Seaman's Buenos Aires mix was a darker Trance mix, and Danny T's London was very much a House mix. Global Underground jumps all over the place in terms of styles, so it's really hard to just pin one down. The best advice I can offer is sample around from some of the GU DJ's, find out whose style you like and don't like, and take it from there.

A cursory glance around amazon.ca tells me that they have nearly all of the CDs from your list. I was quite surprised actually; though perhaps I shouldn't be. I buy a fair number of CDs through a.ca as it is. BTW, I'd heard of about half the DJs from your list. Laughing
You're quite right when you suggest I should at least start with the lighter side of prog, sort of get climatized I guess you could call it. That's why Holden's stuff attracts me; it's proggy, but still definately trance with a good melody. At couple of those CDs contain quite uplifting trance as well, I saw Airwave and Cafe del Mar without really looking closely at too many track-lists.
I don't suppose you'd care to recommend, say 3-5 CDs from that list to start. Just so I can get a feel for it.

And anybody else who wants to recommend stuff, I'd be glad to hear your suggestions, particularly if they're on the hard/psy/goa side of things. This is your chance to plug for your favourite DJ, remember.

Jody Wisternoff - Way Out There
Nicholas Bennison - TranceGlobalNation 4
Dave Ralph - Resident Alien
Joshua Ryan - By Design (Sort of an artist album, but a very good one)
Ashley Casselle - Response

Those are probably the 4 best starting albums on that list; they're all very good, and it's hard to pick-and-choose between them like that.

Oh, and I forgot a close personal favourite:

Armin van Buuren - 002: Basic Instinct

It's on the expensive side, but definately worth it.

Like nwopper says, definitely try to check out ID&T's Hardtrance CD's. Especially the first 2 are magnificent imo, there's a lot of older S.H.O.K.K. / Flutlicht material on there, as well as loads of other cool tunes!
