Following the great reaction of 16 Steps 001, with support from the likes of Nick Warren, Hernan Cattaneo & Anil Chawla. 16 Steps Production School is proud to present the second release on its in-house label. Built around the success of many of its students Worldwide, the label features original work and remixes created solely by students and close friends of 16 Steps.
Born in Sicily, Gabriele has been DJing since the early nineties and moved to London in 2001 with the intent of broadening his knowledge in electronic music and club culture. His music style - a sophisticated mix of tech-house and techno earned him a set for DTPM at Fabric, where he soon became a regular guest and one of their World Tour DJ’s. Gabriele has to date played at most of London’s premier nightclubs such as Egg (current residency), Fabric, The Cross, The End, MOS, Heaven, Fire, Area and he has most recently linked his name to TRADE – the mother of all among the world’s afterhours, celebrating its 20th anniversary with two major events in 2009 held at Ministry of Sound.
Wishing to channel his growing musical experience into the realms of music production, Gabriele visited 16 Steps in early 2009 and it now gives us great pleasure to release his debut.
The Scheme is a fine piece of Tech House, combining crisp and swung percussion with a deep, yet funky bass. As the track builds, Gabriele juxtaposes sharp key stabs with deeper delay-ridden bell chimes before changing direction towards the breakdown. Intense pads enter through a twisted mass of delays before the track falls smoothly back to its original groove after the break.
Remixing the Scheme for us is London-based DJ/Producer and Illicit Audio resident, Justin Steel. A one-time 16 Steps student himself, Justin is now fast-rising as one of London’s well-respected new artists, with productions and remixes for Cubism, Stripped Recordings and Influential House already under his belt. His remix focuses on the chimes and pad, taking the listener on a deeper journey than the original, though without losing the element of funk in the bass. Additional synth melodies compliment these and are accompanied by a clean and steady percussive groove.
Surround is one of the rare tech house tracks in a major key and thoroughly depicts Gabriele’s lively personality. Upbeat live percussion, paired with a bouncing bass are accompanied by short synth and brass stabs. The introduction of a rolling chromatic bass in the breakdown is sure to lift heads on any dance floor.
