The Rise Of Digital Labels

With al the music download shops popping up everywhere and digital labels springing up by the day it surprises me why a few little known artists dont set up their own store to sell their music.

If your a little shop you can set up a web site and sell your goods so easy these days so whats stopping an artist who does not want to get his music tied to a label setting up his own?

Yeah, but it also costs a bit to set up a fully functional digitial shop. Don't think there is any "free" software out there for doing this.

Guess that's the reason why we don't see more of them...

Also, it would require quite an amount of work to promote such a small shop on the internet without spending too much money on it.

The music has got to be good enough first as well.

With so many digital labels it can take hours to sift through the crap to find anything good.

Currently there are many programming platforms to build a music shop on. It does take money and takes many hours for a developer to really develop the back end of the label shop. So if any artist wants to take this route they need to have quite bit of money to start it up. However if a proper amount of money is invested, the artist can recoup his investment with a few good releases. But again there are more added issues to contend with like taxation, Licensing, and distribution.

Perhaps for an artist starting out a label might not be such a bad idea after all.
