Way to go Tiesto! Im so excited that hes going to be playing in the opening ceremony or the Olympics! This is a great day for DJs and Producers all over the world. One can only imagine what will be the product of this event. Will techno become more popular? Will people open their eyes to the greatness that is Electronic? Or will they turn their back on this music and think nothing of this historical event? Only time will tell...

It might be good for trance if Sasha, Sander Kleinenberg, or Dave Seaman had been picked. With Tiesto picked, it's not really that good.

He was voted the #1 DJ in the world by DJ Magazine. But still, hes the 1st. This is a groundbreaking event.

Hmm...one magazine says he's the best based on a bunch of 15-year old's votes. That doesn't really mean a whole lot to me.

I'd rather have a respectable, long-time standing member of the genre play, instead of an up-and-coming pop artist.

Did you listen to Just Be? I really don't want people thinking I listen to that music just because I listen to DJ-mixed music.

Even BT or Oakenfold would be better than him.

So what you're saying is you prefer house to Tiësto's brand of trance.

So what are you saying Oakenfold is crap? I think hes awesome. But I would have prefered Ron van den Beuken or ATB. What I meant b4 was that hes the first to play at the Olympics. But I really think having Sasha up there would be a bad idea. I definately dont think Sasha is crap but I wouldnt have him play in front of some 4 billion people because there are very many people that dont listen to electronica. If I were to introduce that music to them, I would use a genre that is similar to their tastes. Them I would go more hardcore (not the genre Hardcore). Since Tiesto does a lot of pop like stuff he should be up there because pop is very popular.

Sander Kleinenberg - Buenos Aires and Sasha & Emerson - Scorchio are house?

I've never heard Seaman spin House...he's been close, but I've never heard of him doing it. Sasha might be associated with it, mostly because of Digweed, but he's moved over to the Breakbeat side of things more. Even a few years back he was a trance DJ, which is never more apparent than on his GU: San Fran or GU: Ibiza comilations.

And Sander Kleinenberg is a bit eclectic, but he's always had a fairly strong connection with trance.

To be fair, I think trance is sometime from the mid-late 90's, mostly non-vocal, and not quite so melody-heavy as today's trance; closer to Progressive than the more common Uplifting genre.

On the same note, Sander Kleinenberg - Work to Do is most definitely house.

Its a dumb argument though, the lines between house and trance can be blurred so much it can become a fairly arbitrary distinction. You've got good taste, and I respect that, so we'll leave it at that.

Im sticking with Stridr13 on this one!! Im not a big fan of Tiesto anymore but he was one of the first DJs I listened to... and like Stridr13 said, he's got those popular routes which will make the music appeal to a wider audience, and for the Olympics, you're going to need that.

It is a great achievement, even an honor so fair play to Tiesto! Smile

Does anyone think Tiesto is selling out? Many people on InternetDJ seem to think so. I most definately dont think he is selling out. Just like Matthew, I think it is an honor to play at an event such as the Olympics where some 4 billion people will watch.

He's not selling out, he's just not a very good DJ. People like him because he's popular, and he's popular because people like him. He hasn't done as much for the scene as a lot of people that get less credit than him, and he's been doing it for much less time than a lot of popular artists.

Not at all, he's a very talented DJ that has done a lot for the scene. I've enjoyed almost all of his work, but he just doesn't hold the same appeal as the aforementioned artists.

So you're saying that we should introduce the world to DJ-mixed pop? I think that's going to hurt the scene more than the good it might do, exposure-wise.

What Im saying is it should be gradually introduced. Start off with something that the non-electronica listeners can relate to then go more into the Electronica genre. Kind of like a drug. Give a small dosage, they will form an addiction and eventually, they will form a tolerance and they will need more.

What the hell

Tiesto has sold out, that's nothing new, he also can't mix worth a damn anymore. I know, I saw him in 2001 and 2002, great in 01 and complete shite in 2002. Since then, he has forgotten how to pick tracks and he rather just add more coin to his coffers, producing lame crap on the masses. ATB is garbage as well, as well as a thief, his beach song from his 2002 album called Remember was a complete rip off of Scorchio. They always pick the popstars for the Olympics. I find it funny that you lot worship AvB, PvD and Tiesto, when all of them have seen better days and rather play the same old crap on the masses while ditching innovation for more record sales, they are killing trance music. It's sad because I used to like hearing all 3, now I can't stand them anymore. They have sold out and rather just sell the same formulaic crap to the masses, no innovation anymore, it's sad. That's just my opinion tho.

I don't think that's the right way to go about it. If people like a sound, they like a sound. Overexposure is worse for the genre. Especially with the fomula-produced vocal ASOT top-pop being released these days, people will think that trance is repetitive and boring for a good reason. Throw something they don't expect to get them hooked, not try to force-feed them Euro-cheese like too many of the top DJ's today.

I don't think one Tiesto performance will change anyone's mind about trance music, it's not going to sweep the masses who hear him perform and make them fans, because I've learned that trance fans (at least in my experience) become fans gradually, like a long, uphill climb. I don't know one non-fan who has listened to one or two performances and been hooked. Especially not by Tiesto, and I DO have a lot of respect for the man's catalog. Actually I think BT would be a better choice for the olympics because even his less pop-sounding work seems to appeal better to non-listeners, but still, no one's mind is going to be dramatically changed.

RayvinAzn, when it comes to mixing, Tiesto is technically flawless, so how you can say he is not a very good DJ is beyond me and probably everyone else, Tiesto is one of the producer/DJ's that brought Trance into the furore. I think he deserves a little bit more respect. Also another thing that makes Tiesto so popular, is that he really gets the crowd going, he is so energetic, you can see by his emotions just how much the music means to him.

His tracklisting went to shit, that's why. He stopped caring as much about the music, and focusing more on becoming popular, and well-heard. Which is fine, and his choice, but not my (and many others) cup of tea. Tiesto did NOTHING for bringing trance to the future, he is just in the right place at the right time; people are exploring the music a little more now, and he happens to be a big name. He's done nothing radical, nothing to push the envelope, and nothing to further the sound.

If I want energetic, I'll check out Donald Glaude...ever see someone spin with his hands behind his back? It's hard to find more energy than a 200+ pound black man screaming behind the decks.

Tiesto hands done plays better to the crowds...

People were really into his sets...only Van Dyk got a bigger reception in Miami...

One song, versus a whole career of crap. Here it is: Oakenfold has done more for Trance than Tiesto could ever hope to. Tijs mixing is getting sloppy, he's afraid to try new things, and he doesn't produce his own tracks. I'm pretty sure I've seen them more times than you, especially since you mentioned Ultra, one of the most horrid, overrated, and talentless dance festivals ever held. Paul in '99 was a sight to see, while Tijs hadn't even been put on the map yet.

God Damn. I am sick and tired of this bullshit debating you all are doing. All this is now is one person saying "oh i think it will be good" and the other saying the exact opposite. I made a simple little post and you all to debate the shit out of it. Everybody has there own feelings. Respect them. All I wanted to know was what people think about Tiesto performing at the Olympics, not what Tiesto did in their past. This isnt about what he HAS done but rather but he WILL do. Live in The Now! Tiesto HAS done a lot for the genre. HE BROUGHT IT TO THE OLYMPICS FOR BILLIONS TO SEE AND HEAR! This is a first. A FIRST. It has never been done before. Those who have no clue what trance is or even the whole Electronica genre is will get to experiance something new and different and broaden their musical horizons.

This really bothers me... People always give Tiësto shit about this, but so many producers work with other producers in the majority of their work. No one ever gives Picotto crap about working with Ricardo Ferri a lot. I mean, come now. Give the man some credit.

Tiesto playing trancemusic for so many viewers/listeners will without doubt be a great worldwide boost for the trance-community in general.

The organizers could have picked up some hiphop and rap-artists instead you know...

I dont think hes playin anything that would do the scene good because its all his pop-trance shite off his latest album. Best song has been 'Lethal Industry'. Turned it off now, not captivating me anymore ...

That would have definetely sucked... thank God the olympic shows aren't determined by MTV like those of most major sport events in the US.
