Post subject: Why do dj's mix other dj's? |
|
|
I've been listening to electronic music avidly for a couple years now...but there is few fan's in my area so when I have questions the internet is the only place I can go to get answers...
And my question right now is this...
Why do dj's mix other dj's? What gives a dj the right to mix another dj's music? I hope you don't get me wrong, I don't hate it when a dj's song's are mixed. I know very well that sometimes a mixed song is much better than the original. And I do understand that dj's are so widespread apart and to promote one another and lesser known dj's you have to mix their music...at least that's one theory I have.
But honestly...why do they mix music? Why don't dj's make all their music from scratch
Thanks, Jesse

| Often different producers remix other peoples tracks to give everyone something they like, but they are asked to remix the track, they dont just do it unless its for their own personal use i guess ... But I think your 'who gives them a right' comment is abit pathetic, they're mearly doing what they love doing, producing music!

01. Producers remix music for money, because they get paid from the label who is releasing the track.
02. New producers who are good get to to do remixes for exposure to a wider audience.
03. Alternative mixes also have alternative styles sometimes and this means that a track can be heard by people who perhaps prefer a different style of music.
04. Producers have fun remixing song they like, and put their own edge on it.
There are lots of reasons

Not every producer is a DJ, and not every DJ is a producer.
One thing I like about electronic music is that not everybody has their asshole puckered up tighter than a snare drum over "their" tunes. They know it's good exposure for them to have their tunes played, and it makes them strive to make better tunes to get played. Basically, the system in place right now makes everyone strive to be the best, rather than do the bare minimum.

I guess you're talking about people remixing others' tracks. In my opinion, there are a couple good reasons for this:
1. If a well known producer remixes you track (ex. Ferry Corsten) then your track will get a lot of exposure, because a big-name producer thought it was good enough to remix. The original will probably get just as much publicity for the remix.
2. It helps the track in question to appeal to a broader audience.
3. And because they like to do it, to their own sound into another track.

The remix can be a very good thing especially if the original track is a little lacking.
They may also remix it in a style that fits their DJ sets so if offers something a little bit different. Or they remix it because they get a nice bit of money from doing so.

But most producers aren't exclusively remix artists and make a lot of their own original work as well. A remix is not in any way a rip-off of an original track. Full credit is given to the artist who made the original track and is it commonly the case that they are the people who approach other artists to go on remix duty, not the other way around.

If I don't get you wrong, the most likely answer should be this: producers remix other producers tracks either because they're asked by the label a certain track is signed to, and then they'll get some money for it; and/or they ask the label to remix a track to get other labels interested in signing them! Quite often when a producer has made a new track, he starts working on other material, and then his/her label has to get someone making another version of it; that's why this is so common in EDM land

I'd have to ask the DJ in question to get the gospel "straight from the horse's mouth", so to speak. Seriously, diff. DJs and producers are going to have different motivations as to how they approach the work of another. And yeah, like Cooler said, the fair exchange thing -- some say it gets nepotic after awhile, but it sounds reasonable that if someone's going to remix your track, you repay the favor in the future musically.

Hmm hard enough question to answer aint it? Well the fact is i think personally is that if you or the person who is doing the remix has a spark go off about the song and has a way of making it better its fine.great ideas come in at random times just to say. to me its not more of a compition even though in some cases it is but really for the music and for the caring fans who love to enjoy hearing remixes of lets say their fav. songs. Keep it spinning and never stop. thats what i would say.

Also, theres so many tracks just begging for a remix! They've got some great element, but everything else is all wrong... I remember a quote from Oakenfold about this...
A track that comes to mine is Randy Katana's In Silence... For me there was something missing in the initial cuts but the van den Beuken mix really sealed the deal.

It is usually about the label or the artist
some artists trade mixes, some artists get friends, some artists don't let their tracks be remixed, xpander was never touched and won't be because Sasha says no. It all depends on the deal and the offer.

So I couldn't remix 'Xpander', burn it onto a CD-R and play it in one of my sets Andy?

Yea, I was joking Aquascape and I'm sure Andy realised that.
Stridr13, you can shut the fuck up! All you've done since you've joined is cause trouble ... I wasnt being anal, or trying to start anything for that matter but obviously you are. When you've reached as many posts as I have and been a forum moderator AND editor for i:Vibes maybe I'll start considering your opinion.
