hi i am a trance dj in the uk and i have looked at this trackitdown site and its got a long way to go.....
There are only two contenders for best download site i feel and that is WWW.AUDIOJELLY.COM and WWW.BEATPORT.COM, also have you seen how much trackitdown charge? (up to £2.06 per track) looks like a bit of a con to me, why should i pay double for the same music on trackitodwn as all 3 sites have the same sort of music, also where's their 150 labels? they said they have in their press release which somehow i got. Oh and i could not listen to samples on TIFD site.

Perhaps it's worth it if you're just after a single random song that you don't want to purchase a whole album or compilation for, but it definitely doesn't seem worthwhile downloading a lot.

192 isn't top quality at all. If your going to be buying music this way it should at least be in aif or wav format.

you will find that www.edmdigital.com already do 320 kps and in the news section of www.audiojelly.com they say its coming soon. so WAV not needed.
ok so it £1.50 per track but you will noice that they charge 56pence for fraud whereas none of the other sites charge this, as i said "CON"

I'm curious - you say 'at least wav or aif' - what should we supply the music in at best - complete 32-bit cubase files so everyone can do their own remixes??!
Seriously though, if you can tell the difference between a 320Kbit MP3 encoded from digital source and a 44.1 KHz wav file on a club rig then you've got magical ears. I have difficulty identifying mp3 compression artifacts at that bitrate on pro audio gear - I can certainly hear a much bigger difference comparing digital source with vinyl.
Here at TMet we've decided to go for 320 KBit MP3's - we provided a lean option of 160 Kbit for the first 6 months, but no-one ever used the option so we've dropped it.
It's very a very interesting time in the digital download world at the moment, as 12 months ago there was nothing and now we have a profusion of sites cropping up, all offering different takes on the subject. Audiojelly and TID are both essentially online distributors wheras we're a record label that specialises in online content...
Which brings me to my main point (yes, I have one!) - We're still on the lookout for new talent, so if you're producing dance music and are struggling to get your music noticed, drop us a line - send demos through to chelfyn@tmet.net - links to externaklly hosted mp3s are best, but if you have to mail me entire songs that's fine too.
We'd also welcome feedback on our site. We've built it at a fraction of the price of the other sites mentioned here and we're working hard to keep up with them. Feedback and wishlists from users like yourselves are really valuable and will help us make the best site possible.
Cheers!
Chelfyn

Its impossible to drop the price. MCPS licensing dictates that a good chunk of the sale value goes direct to them for artist royalties. We offer a damn good deal to the labels in the first place to keep them in business.
Why should tracks cost £ 1 ?
The 99c download was introduced by Apple as a loss leader to sell iPods. The CEO of Apple has stated that its an unviable business model - I totally agree with him.
As far as bit rates go - You really must have some very special hearing if you can tell the difference. It's not just DJ's that want to buy music - there are many more music fans than clubbers and they dont want to spend hlaf their life downloading 1 track.
I am happy as long as you pay for your downloads by using one of these services instead of stealing via P2P networks.

No, now your just putting words in my mouth. If you read carefully I said at least aif, as in an awesome compression of wav, or wav, as in wav being the best. What I didn't say was it should be at least wav.
And why not? This is in effect basically what you are paying for when you purchase a CD, so why not when you purchase over the internet. Just so you can save a bit of money on bandwidth. heh. I'll stick to CD's and vinyl.

It saves us absolutely nothing on bandwidth, now it's you making assumptions! *rolls eyes back atcha*
The reason we sell mp3's and not aifs and wavs is that the vast majority of users on the net have chosen mp3s themselves as the the most convenient medium, a balance between quality and bandwidth. We'd offer aifs if we thought that enough people would want to buy them to make the offer worthwhile, but I'm afraid you're in a tiny minority at the moment. This may change once available bandwidth goes up, but right now, mp3s are king.
We did, for a time, have an open offer to any DJ's that required uncompressed versions of the music, that we would burn and mail them CD's, but we had not a single taker on that.
Also bear in mind that while you may have a cheap fast broadband connection, most people in the world don't. We're a small label based in New Zealand, where all the broadband accounts are capped at between 5 and 10 gig of international traffic a month. A year ago that cap was 2 gig. There are more countries in this situation, or countries limited to modem use only, than countries like the states or the UK where there's a reasonably large and affordable broadband network in place.
If you want to stick to CD's and vinyl, then that's all well and good, and it's your choice, but the mp3 distribution model is making it much easier for us to break new artists as we don't have to risk large amounts of cash pressing vinyl that may not sell, or pressing another couple of thousand CD's, the bulk of which these days end up played once, ripped, converted to mp3s and then left to gather dust. what a waste.
As for pricing, we completely agree with TID. Neither TID our oursleves can possibly compete with the wal-marts of this world, and we wouldn't want to either. We're now in a situation where we can offer artists a whopping great 50% cut of profits, and we don't crucify them with recoupment either. This can only be a good thing for the music business. More music, by more producers, sold to more customers than ever before.
