I finally got a break, and was hired by a local club to do a "dance/trance/techno" set. Unfortunately, I went against what could probably have been my better judgement, and spun this set instead:

Ils - Music (Evil9's Punk Rocks Mix)
Apex - Bangin'
Silencer - Rollin' and Controllin'
Hyper - Slapper
B.L.I.M. - Chronologic
Beber - Juvenile Delinquent (Tectonic Mix)
Hyper - Catnip
God Within - Raincry (Koma & Bones Remix)
Beber & Tamra - You Wonder (Starecase Vocal Cut)
BT - Never Gonna Come Back Down (Hybrid's Breaktek Mix)
Way Out West - Activity
Chable & Bonnici - Ride (Have a Break Mix)
Starecase - Bitter Little Pill
Trinity Hi-Fi - Turn the Lights Down (Dave London Remix)

Needless to say, the club owner was a bit peeved...he was expecting Sandstorm, 9PM, and Kernkraft 400, I think. Ah well...if that's really what he wanted, he's probably better off without me.

Crowd reaction was a bit sheisty as well...they're not really into Breakbeats on Okinawa, they're still in the cheesy trance phase.

A very nice ste of tracks but to people more familer with the commercial side of dance music in a club situation it might have been best if you stick to the well known but not cheesy tracks.

Even so, as a DJ you should spin the records in the style that you like rarther than just play the stuff the club owner wants as you never know the crwod may take to it one day.

Yea...he was a bit of a prick anyway, I might have played something trancier if he hadn't been such a tosser about making his point that he wanted "club stormers", and acted like a boner about being in charge, and to not second-guess his knowledge of the club scene.

I guess it's back to the Coral Moon, spinning with Shane, Ken, Motoki, and Tsune on the weekends, for a crowd of 8, that consists entirely of close friends, and one lost, drunk person that's not sure where they are. Razz

Commercial clubs make me sick now, because over here they begin the night with predictable shite r n b... then they spend the last 30 mins playing the worst of the worst cheese... some cheese is ok, but the shite they spin over here is really incredible and you wouldnt believe what they have the balls to stick on.

Give this a try:

Ultrabeat
Northern Heights or lights or whatever they r called
DJ SAMMy

Shite like that, and they play the same fucking song every fucking night.... its a disaster to go out anywhere.. most of the time id rather sit in silence tyhan listen to the cra[p theey stick on in bars even before we head out to the club....

amazingly crap

That sounds like most the the local bars and clubs around my local area. All they seem to play is RnB or really cheesy Special D, Ultrabeat style tripe.

Activity is a non-vocal, trancier hit by Warren and Wisternoff. It was featured on Paul van Dyk's Politics of Dancing, and WoW's artist album, Intensify.

It's a really great song, I love the melody, and bassline is incredible as well. It is probably one of my favorite songs by the infamous duo to date.

I suppose the key is to do as you're told while your foot's in the door. Once the door is firmly closed behind you then you can start thinking for yourself. Sad, but true and with the music industry being the way it is I think you have to do a bit of brown-nosing to get anywhere. Either that or just have contacts.

I agree with you and if playing to your friends and at small venues is all you want then you can afford the luxury of only pleasing yourself.

It may have been better to start out with more crowd-friendly stuff and then worked your way on.
You don't have to play Scooter and Darude, but you could play quality trance that is more new-listener friendly. You could even play older stuff like Veracocha and Gouryella - nobody would know the difference.
Of couse that's just my opinion - breakbeat is a big step from Avril Lavigne and Sam Roberts.
