I'm really the detroit techno historian of most boards. I rarely listen to it anymore but I know too much and it goes like this.

back in 1983, Juan Atkins and a vietnam vet named Rick Davis decided to make music and they were called cybotron. They broke up, so you had the belleville 3 get together (derrick may, juan atkins and kevin saunderson,). See May, Juan's brother Aaron and Saunderson went to school together at Belleville High. So later on in 1985, the 3 get together and decide to name their genre TECHNO, atkins and saunderson loved it and may hated it, but he was talked into it. It was based out of Chicago House (with Ron Hardy (RIP), Frankie Knuckles). Derrick May went on to create rhythm is rhythim and he set the tone with nude photo, strings of life and others. May was the leader, also during this time, you have alan oldham, robert hood, jeff mills and Mad Mike Banks. So May was really leading most of the techno stuff at some point (he later went into self imposed production retirement, which continues in 2004 with few exceptions because critics tore apart his 1993 album and he got mad). Kevin Saunderson went on to create Inner City and make great stuff out of that. Juan Atkins was always pushing whatever he likedl. This catches on in Europe, you have people like Dave Clarke and others deciding to create techno (that's how the scene grew after may and co. played stuff in Europe). So at one point, Mad Mike Banks and Jeff Mills sit down for months planning Underground Resistance and eventually mills leaves to get a residency in New York for club owner Peter Gatien. Leave Banks to basically with t-1000 (alan oldham and robert hood..push UR). UR is all about the music, nothing about the artists. Mad Mike Banks has done maybe 3-4 interviews in his lifetime, never been photographed and remains a complete mystery. May is the godfather and he runs detroit techno like the mafia, he don't like you then others won't work with you, he blackballed blake baxter from detroit and blake still wants to fight may. The second wave of techno producers came along Kenny Larkin (former comedian), Stacy Pullen and Carl Craig. So really you have a core group of 6 with mad mike banks holding influence. May is such a ego maniac that he tired to blackball ritchie hawtin from detroit in the late 80's cuz they were mad a white kid from windsor were hijacking the music. So may is a genius but a truly arrogant genius who has pissed off many in running his mob. That's really the history of detroit techno.....missing a few names but that's more or less what's happened in the years.

Hi Andy,
First, thanks very much to have taken the time to write a long post like this...

I've some questions and if you can answering me, it can be much appreciated.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

back in 1983, Juan Atkins and a vietnam vet named Rick Davis decided to make music and they were called cybotron"[/list]
Do you know if Rick Davis do music now ? I know their first record on Fantasy "Enter" with clear, alleys of your mind, ... And I've a lot of other Juan Atkins productions, I love them.

"May was the leader, also during this time, you have alan oldham, robert hood, jeff mills and Mad Mike Banks"

I respect them for 300% !!! I've meet Alan Oldham during a party in Belgium and see Mills and May during their performances throughout Europe. They are in my eyes perhaps "the funk of today" and certainly "the funk of tomorrow"

"Juan Atkins was always pushing whatever he liked!"

He's the master !

UR is all about the music, nothing about the artists. Mad Mike Banks has done maybe 3-4 interviews in his lifetime, never been photographed and remains a complete mystery

I'm white, european, out of his generation, a lot of differences for sure between a people like Mike and a people like me but his music have an impressive impact on me, the story and messages by UR too, deeper, their music have a particular something but I've not the words for describe it.

"May is the godfather and he runs detroit techno like the mafia, he don't like you then others won't work with you"

I love the musician but ... No comment !

"That's really the history of detroit techno....."

For sure ! Thanks again, I've often read that Detroit peoples are not really interesting by techno music from the city but from an another place in the world, our vision can be different and sometimes an insignifiant thing for one can be very impoirtant for another one.

no see they started out making music that no one else was making. That's why they are arrogant at times because they did go through a lot of crap to make techno.

Now about Derrick May blackballing Blake Baxter, that's true. Blake Baxter worked with some detroit techno ppl then none for yrs and he addressed that in an interview, where he said he would kick may's ass. Techno has always been about the music, not about the artist, not about the label, just about the music. That's why you don't see many interviews with them. UR is a confused label imo, seems that Jeff Mills and others took the same viewpoint as Mad Mike Banks, all about cosmic consciousness and weird stuff. I like UR's releases but their garbage philosphy bores me because it makes no sense.

It's true about Derrick May running the detroit techno scene like a mafia, he has blackballed many over the years. Fabio and Grooverider did the same thing with drum n bass. They somehow get asked should i work with him, because they hold the influence. Detroit Techno is a small social club with few members, hard to get in and tightly guarded.

I'm pretty sure they decided to call it techno because they wanted to give a mix CD they did a different name, and they decided to call it that because of the equipment they used to make it?
