Psy trance is good, like some of the psy that astral projection has done in the past, not so much the newer stuff. If i had to choose between Goa and Psy, i would definitly go with Goa. Psy is good to listen to while ur getting high. Funny thing is i'm in the school library and i'm sitting next to a cop right now while i'm talking about getting high.

Goa is a kind of Psy, in my opinion... (Some ppl will definately disagree, but for me Goa is something like a kind of Psy, such as Dark is another kind, etc...

So you can not say the differences between then, because there are ALL differences ! (Or None ! ) hehehe... Sounds confuse, eh ? Well, to think easily: HOW CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRANCE AND HARD TRANCE ??? Difficult, because youīll have manyyy kinds of TRANCE. And Hard Trance is one of them, such as Uplifting, Drama, and also the Goa Trance :P

Well, donīt bother with this issue mate... I can tell you, Goa, Psy or whatever else you think that sound is called, itīs from another planet, and left a great energy inside you ! ;)

Ok, maybe this is a bit of an old discussion, but I bumped into it sideways (from a search engine), which means it's still on servers, and people are reading it.

I noticed Viceroy was asking about the difference between Psy trance and Goa trance. Even though the specific person/entity might have found the answer by now, I am still answering it for anyone that will find him/her-self scrolling through these olds conversations, like me.
The name Psychedelic trance was devised in 1994 for a genre of music that evolved from the electronic movement of hard acid techno in england, netherlands and belgium, trance in germany and france, and the psychedelic ideals that have remained in the spirits of travellers, over the years, all the way from the late 60s.
Many of them could be found partying in Goa, India, where the beach fire parties have stayed lit since the times of the hippies, listening and dancing to psychedelic rock. Towards the end of the eighties, the electronic dance evolution managed to migrate down there, and feeding on the spiritual fuel of the place, it re-exploded. So from about 1988 to 1994 people have been dancing to a form of music that was psychedelic trance but was not particularly called psychedelic trance. Some of the psychedelic trance labels have existed even before 94, and were producing good music, but all of a sudden, on that year a number of them, like dragonfly, blue room, trust in trance, spirit zone, TIP, flying rhino and a few others, have decided to promote their releases as psychedelic trance.
Since then, things have been exactly like narcism has described, everything that psychedelic trance labels released was classed as psy trance.
Regardless of the marketing efforts to define the genre, a more independent definiton was already available.
Psychedelic trance is trance because of it's multilayered melodies aiming to send you straight to a state of trance, and it is psychedelic for two reasons. One is that the sounds and samples used are indeed quite madening, with a random timing, which only makes sense through the inherent repetitiveness, and usually at the final lay down, where all the layers are complete. A profound and good example of this is the music made by hallucinogen.
The music though is also psychedelic for one more reason not known to everyone, and quite often, not even to those who make it. It always contains a very deep, almost subsonic base sequence, or one of the sounds in the track is filtered in such a way as to produce this low frequency, continuous buzz. Apparently, a deep base has been and still is the greatest incredient of psychedelia. It's the inner primordial frequency of human consious, the Ohm, as some religions might claim. Modern science has explained it in a different way. For the more interesting readers, a search for michael percinger's magnetic helmet experiments, and how his science has evolved to the 4 magnet shakti helmet, later on merging with meditative, zen practises into the 2 speaker, sound induced out of body experiences (astral projections). The more suspicious of us might call it brain manipulation, or a sonic drug. And us, the chronic listeners of psy trance will easilly admit that one day we just got addicted to it, and never turned back.
But why was the name of the city/area Goa used as a music genre, and how does it differentiate from psychedelic trance. The first release I can recall, containing the word Goa in its name was by one of Gilbert thevenet's projects "Subliminal". The track was released in 1992 and was called "Goa Subliminal". But it was 3 years later, in 1995 that more labels were formed in europe, like "distance", "matsuri" and "why not", that initiated a series of releases carrying the name goa. Those releases were compilations of a more experimental and slightly more complex form of psychedelic trance and trance in general (prana, tufaan, etc), that was usually inspired by the hindu culture and religion. Illustrations of hindu symbols, gods and mithology were comonly printed on the front covers. So that was it, goa trance was also formed. At the begining no-one could reall differentiate between the two, and goa trance did not have its own dedicated artists, it was just that some of their tracks were more goa, and some were more psy trance. Soon after, somewhere between 96 and 97, goa trance had aspired more towards the eastern melodies (those using transitions between the semi-tones) in contrat to the western european music style (based in full tone transitions between the notes). It could be said that goa was becoming a subgenre of psy trance, but the name psy trance was being used more by the labels of germany, england and france, than the southeast axis of israel greece and italy, that peculiarly enough ended up in close co-operation with the swedish and danish production (Astral Projection, mfg, miko & har el, etnica/pleiadians, mystica, Jaia, bypass unit, subcouds), not that the mid-european axis was ever exluded from those productions, especially with projects such as transwave, shakta and electric universe. The situation was stabilising at this eastern-western melody type distinction until in 98 morning melodic, or uplifting (a more ambiguous name) was formed in israel, and outbreaked all the way through greece, italy, germany just about reaching the shores of uk. From there after, all hell broke loose in terms of naming and subgenre discrimination. Goa trance and psychedelic trance ended up meaning everything and nothing at the same time.
After a whole period of expiramentation with tribalism in 99-2002 the situation started settling again after 2003. Nowadays we have "full on" which is supposed to represent the most multilayered spieces, though it only represents the type of psy trance that is based on the "Riktam & Bansi - GMS" prototype. The most multilayered music ever produced is arguably that of Pleiadians in their first album (mayby bits of the second one two) and recently resurected by Filteria in sweden. Hallucinogen, Battle of the Future Buddhas and Psychaos,Tim Schuldtz quirk, rhythmistec, chi-ad, synchro, DNA (il), the muses rapt and many others of that time have also elaborated on multilayered music, much more than the full on movement of today.
The term Goa trance these days is used by most people to describe this multilayered, extremely melodic, yet powerfull and uplifting trance that had dominated the psy trance scene between 96 and 98. Yes, it's also refered to as old school, and efforts are being put forward to revive it, or to fuse back the broken pieces of our aged beloved music into what it used to be, maybe somewhat evolved through history and experience.
Other subgenres include dark, nitzhonot (never sure if I've spelled it right), uplifting (as if the rest are not uplifting), minimalistic, progressive (usually representing the more experimental and peculiar side, but not always), tribal, acid (or lysergic, based on a notion that TB-303s and Ls go well together), ambient/chill-out, Jungle-psychedelic (see digitalis), and a name is pending for the quite rescent, sing-along rock-trance, that infected mushroom, space *beep* and the like have happily brought to our ears.

When it comes to recomendations about psy trance, someone has mentioned has mentioned Ken Da Lyud's "Goa Syndrome" on Cygnetic Records. According to my personal opinion, I'd say every single one of those tracks represent in great extend what psy-trance should sound like. As a general guidance, I would recomend anything made in 96&97 for really good old school goa trance. Bamboo forest and hux flux for th 1999-2000 sounds. GMS, Space buddha, parascense, infected mushroom for 2001 to 2003. 1200 mics and goa gill for 2004. For nice and fresh new music I would go for Electric universe and Space tribe, both in spirit zone, and both with extra heavy experience on their backs!!!! I also noticed that every album by the artist Cosmosis is a very good reflection of what psy trance sounded like at the time of their release.

And a final comment about commercialisation of psy trance, it is happening as we speak, and astral projection and now infected mushroom have played a very significant role in that, together with most of the isreli scene, where psy trance is not considered much different that the rest of the dance music genres, and may easily be played after an R&B song in a club. The music might conquer the world in one of its forms, and while it will still be called psy trance, real psychedelic people will sease to be interested in it.
