why is it DVD's u buy pre-recorded contain more than 4.7gb pf data ?? and then the blank ones u buy dont.. this makes it complely inpossible to back up dvd's...
anyone know a way around it ?? or know why it happens ?

They probably do it this way so you can't copy them.

I believe it's because the ones you buy pre-recorded contain 2 layers of data, while the current dvd-recorders only can store 1 layer.
I think new recorders that can store in 2 layers will come out in April.

Hi,
you can still backup those larger DVD's by compressing the video stream.
All you need can be found at http://www.doom9.org
That'll keep you busy for a few weeks.
But it's worth it. If you decide to go deep into that field, you're in for a hell of an adventure.
