Post Post subject: crash course on trance singles Reply with quote

hi everyone. i started listening to trance/techno a while ago, when my friend gave me some ATB singles. i think it had 9PM, the launch, a few others.

the thing is there isn't a trance/techno radio station in my area so i never heard new tracks. i would just wander into my local record store and see if tiesto or pvd came out with a new cd. there isn't much stuff
released in the US.

i found some internet radio stations now but i know i've missed out on some good songs from the last few years. i was hoping some of you guys recommend some "classic" tracks? some of my favorites include,

beth orton - anywhere (remix)
andain - beautiful things (gabriel and dresden)
atb - let u go
everything from iio
delerium - silence (in search of sunrise remix)

and where's the best place to buy trance CD's in the US? if it's not on amazon or froogle, i'm stumped. i've been having a hell of a time finding ayu - m except at a few british places. but the exchange rate is horrible now and i'm sure shipping's exorbitant.

I know exactly what you mean... Online places to buy trance CDs that will ship to the US can be a big pain to find. The only website I have ever purchased trance CDs from is Amazon.com. I've tried google search, but I've yet to come up with anything...

I buy most of my trance CDs from record stores... I live in quite a large city, and the downtown has some nice shops that carry trance stuff. If you live in Philadelphia, I don't see why you couldn't find some similar shops... I'd try doing a web search for stores in your area.

As for your Ayu - M, the very best place for purchasing Ayu merchandise of any kind online is at http://www.yesasia.com. Their prices are very reasonable and they ship very fast.

Hope this helped a bit! Very Happy

Not to burst your bubble, but The Launch was by DJ Jean. The remix that got the most attention was the ATB mix though, if that's what you're thinking.

Tower Records, Borders, FYE, and pretty much every big-name music store carry a good selection of dance music. Trance CD's are everywhere, you just have to know what to buy, and what to ignore. Not everything in the dance section is quality, you should look into what to buy, and what to ignore. Find out if they're mixed, or if it's some album with a few big-name, good songs, and a bunch of crappy tunes. Just make sure you know what you're paying for.

As for Ayu-M (probably the Above and Beyond mix), I'd agree with Bounce...yesasia is your best bet.

Excellent advice there. I bought Moonshine's That Trance Mix 2 because there some tracks I knew were good on there and I figured the rest of the comp would be decent as well. Turns out this was not the case. Moonshine did not put what mixes of the tracks were on the CD on the case, so I ended up getting stuff like Ferry Corsten - Punk (Rich Kidz Remix) which was a rather pointless remake, and other such versions of tracks by people like Matt Darey.
Amazon does have a decent selection of trance CDs, especially if you're just getting started. Some compilations that are very good that I have heard that are fairly recent are:
Gatecrasher Resident Transmission (1 and 2)
Godskitchen: Direct
A Trip In Trance (1 and 2) www.hibias.ca
You might also try the Magik series from DJ Tiesto, Blank & Jones - In the Mix 1 and 2, Ferry Corsten live at Spundae Los Angeles, ect.
It sounds like you're more into the vocal trance side of things. Gabriel & Dresden would probably be a good bet, also stuff by Matt Darey and Armin van Buuren. Ferry Corsten and Svenson & Gielen would also be worth a try. Listen to lots of stuff and find what you like. These ones that I've listed are some of the most famous trance producers.

ANother thing, you can try using the forum search to find discussions about classics, there's been a few of them. Smile My personal favourite is Veracocha - Carte Blanche.

If '99 was the best year of trance then I've been listening to it on the down side because I didn't get into it until 2000. Before trance there was drum n' bass and breaks. But I'm glad I made the move over to trance.

Surprised lol

Laughing It's not so much a down side, more a leveling off at a high level.

Razz But 99 hit more classics in one year than any to date. You name them they are there Cool

Soem maybe late 98 or very early 2000, but it was around that time, trance became the force it is today! And LONG MAY IT KEEP GOING AND GOING! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Wink

Maybe that explains why around that time I moved from drum 'n bass to trance.

I'd go with gatecrasher:Resident transmissions 1 and 2. and also if you want to go back in time buy Discotech (not discotech generation). Some classics and hidden gems in there (Deep Blue Sea by Planisphere).

I agree that the Resident Transmissions are really good if you want to hear upfront tunes. Another one to check out is John '00' Fleming's Godskitchen: Direct and ID&T Trance 2003 (available at euromusicworld.com).
