Post subject: Trance is NOT Rave !! |
|
|
We was having a discussion at college the other day and we was talking about things we do in our spare time and inevitably the subject of music came up. I was asked about what music i listen to and i said Trance and someone said "isn't that all that rave shit" I tried the clarify by mentioning the likes of AvB no one had a clue they didn't even know who Tiesto was. There definition of Trance was the likes of Scooter and Ultrabeat. I was then asked if i went to raves and did drugs For gods sakes !! everyone knew what Nu-Metal, Soul, Garage, Rap & RnB was even i can tell the difference and i don't listen to them. Is everyone totally ignorant of what Trance is (barr the obvious) or is it just the people i meet most people probably think it;s some kind of cult
Anyway i thought i'd vent my spleen on the subject

Indeed
To your nu-metal, rock and punk kids then anything with a bassline they would think was 'rave' music. No understanding of the style and feeling of trance music. Alltho you get that a lot, say you like trance and folk automatically reckon you bum the latest release from Ultrabeat and the like.

trance is in no way rave music....
BUT..
i think some ppl use the term "raving" as something u do in clubs.. so even tho the music may not be rave the term "raving" still gets used..
... for ppl saying ultrabeet and scooter are trance, it doesnt suprise me much, as most of the clubs in my local area dont play any trance so no fcukers know what it is..

can't expect everyone to know, understand and respect all genres of music... well, people here call everything with a 4:4 bassline, anything that sounds like dance music, techno. gee. go fig.

RAVE!
The act or an instance of raving.
Informal. An extravagantly enthusiastic opinion or review: The play received raves.
An all-night dance party, especially one where techno, house, or other electronically synthesized music is played.
Chiefly British. A raucous party; a rave-up.
At Least that's how the english Dictionary puts it. I just think the two meanings get mixed up with people who don't really care enough to know. Rave and a rave, aren't the same.
Where as a lot of people I speak to who see rave as old scool stuff and a rave as a place to party.
But I agree, you can't call trance, rave, but you do hear it at Raves! (Yep.......I think that's right)
I have noooooooo Comments about Scooter or Ultrabeat...........I'd end up raving on and on!

Sure, u have your own opinion, but I don´t agree.. Simply because it´s something sooo perfect that needs a perfect landscape, girls, sea, sand, sun, etc !
But of course, Trance is GREAT in every hour of the day ! hehehe :P Night, Day, Afternoon, etc ! 8)

if you only say trance, then ignorant people might pick up on the rave element in it. i reckon theres rave in there (psy-trance? tech-trance?)... but these people fail to recognise that alot of trance can be orchestral too!!
i used to hate it when people asked me what i was listening to; now instead of generalising, i narrow it down a bit - 'nu-skool progressive breaks'... 'electro-tech trance'.... 'funky tribal progressive acid-house'...
then watch them try for a sarky comment while they figure out what these are.

4:4 bassline
Sorry, but wrong. I think alot of you are thinking that a 4:4 kick is a bassline. There is a huge difference. The "Oohn Oohn OOhn Oohn" is the bass drum. A bassline is not the same thing. There can be rolling basslines, and usually and they are NOT 4:4 (4 quarter notes per measure).

I can't stand when people think trance and techno are the same thing, which is basically everyone who listens to mainstream. I hate techno yet love trance...frustrating explaining it to them

I tend to avoid the problem by saying House or Breaks...works pretty good for me, despite the fact that I listen mostly to Progressive Trance...they can't tell the difference anyway.

Me too. Usually, I don't bother saying trance, I say punk. I do like some punk, Rancid ect., and I know enough to get by if they start asking questions. Guess I'm kind of embarrassed even.

Trance is clumusic, and belongs to the clugculturre, while rave is a definition used to state a certain kind of partyculture (with harder electronic music)......I guess!

People are often mistaken with the concept of "RAVE" it gives negative image to trancers, as far as I know the term "RAVE" constitutes to excitement and adrenaline adversity which best desribes "TRANCE". But what I dont understand is that why does it always brings unpleasant impression to that particular term? Is it because of the fact that Trancers are always linked to the use of substances and party pills? well if that the case then we have to draw a line beween "TRANCE" as a music genre and "RAVE" as people who simply raves.

I suppose back in the Rave days a lot of publicity surrounded the Rave scene and the use of drugs and it has stuck with EDM in general. Whats really ironic is the fact that Pop and Rock has had more history with drug abuse than EDM ever has. When was the last time anyone heard a famous DJ snorting coke or taking other drugs compared to a famous Rock or Popstar.

Valid point, QBix. But then people don't want to look for the truth, they'd rather believe their stereotypes.

DJLifeAndDeath: i agree with you. well,u see most of the people dont have a clue what trance is i dont blame them but they have to learn to respect others who listen this kind of music...to understand what trance music is,u need to study her a lot and listen to her.Trance is a difficult music to understand.not just by listening to it once,in that way u cant understand what exactly happens obviously.and because scooter etc are listened more because they are commercial stuff thats why people think its trance or something..people who know what trance music is really get pissed off when others think that commercial stuff are trance i really get very angry when they ask me what i listen to and i answer ''trance progressive etc..'' and others dont respect the music i listen to i believe that happens to most of us...

..and yes, trance is not rave...rave music is not as alive as it used o be 20 years ago..rave culture back then was the time where lots of partys(rave parties)where happening with electronic music with people full of love for the beats.its almost the same thing as now but no exactly..rave parties was like the descendant of love parade or something.of course there where a lot of drugs used, and that was the main reason for the opposition of rave parties by the police.rave culture is like a reaction, like the underground music is now.

I encounter this all the time......lol.....I just reply fuck off usually and go about my business, if people wish to be so stereotypical about music then I won't bother. I listen to trance and other genres yet never done a single drug in my life and never been to a rave....yet I've been to tons of legit clubs in my life and seen many deejays.

Like I said before, I try to keep my musical preferences hush hush... but one time a friend of mine asked what kind of music I listened to - another good friend of mine said techno (which is what I tell people, trance is too hard to explain), he said "Techno? A bunch of gay guys in a dance club!"
No wonder I say punk usually instead of trance or even techno!

well u guys, when they ask me what i listen to i say trance or underground... i'll explain to them if they ask me to or if they dont understand, but if they dont respect what i hear (for example most of them said: 'thats bullshit!') i will have to be agressive and answer: 'dont speak when u dont know something', and anw who cares about them? RESPECT ALL KINDS OF MUSIC

I ALWAYS point out when people say that music is for gay people that without gay people, you probably would not have house, techno or more of the other things. Think about it, the first disco-early house club had gay kids showing up and without them, no one could pay the deejays who were also gay in larry levan and frankie knuckles. Same as when knuckles went to Chicago....gay kids.....hardy was gay as well. So really without gay people, I'm not sure music would be what it is.
