Tor Midtbø from Norway bought himself a cd by the artist Cesaria Evoras. Well home he tried playing it in his brand new Sony dvd-player, but it wouldn't work. Examining the cover closely he saw the cd was copy-protected.

I had that problem with EMI Canada. I bought Chemical Brothers 2 CD Best of the Singles 1993-2003 and it would NOT play in my Sony Discman. Seems the copy protection does not work in any Sony discman, I have friends with Sony Discmans and it did not play. The cd would play in my stereo and my pc but never my discman, which I use often. So I emailed the company and they got me an non copy protected version, which I have now. They stated in their letter that they plan to use copy protection on every single new release but it begs the question, if Sony holds the major % of the discman purchases (which is still a big market imo) and Sony Music is one of the big 5 and they are all introducing the protection but it does not play in discmans, then people are going to get very angry and stop buying their cd's. I think they should have allowed the technology to work in every single discman before releasing it. I will say that the music companies have been quite friendly in replacing and fixing the wrongs.

With them paniking over priacy, which will happen weather they keep following protected CD's or not its really limiting the buyer.

Limiting their options on what they play it on, so they can only play it on hardware that the record company want.

just fecking typical you can't seem to do anything nowadays. If you was to circumvent the copy protection you probably labelled a pirate and help fund drugs and terrorism
