Post Post subject: Downfall of Vinyl? Reply with quote

Seen in the latest issue of DJ Magazine:

'Red Jerry, boss of now defunct record label Hooj, warned DJmag earlier this year, that if labels did not embrace the Internet revolution and set-up online stores, they would cease trading. “The future is digital. Anyone who thinks that DJs will still be playing vinyl in five years is crazy” Red Jerry told DJmag. Hooj has since folded, but still operates its music download service.'

Any thoughts on Red Jerry's quote? Does anybody else feel that the soul and spirit of vinyl will fall soon?

Here is the article: http://www.djmag.com/news_detail.asp?id=22

So do you think that this will cause a reduction in vinyl production for new releases? Thats what I'd be most worried about. I don't really care how people spin so long as theyre enjoying theirselves. But if it becomes unprofitable for companies to keep selling vinyl, then that would lead to a downfall of a great subculture. You have to admit that there is a major difference in the mystique between vinyl DJ's and CD DJ's.

Also you could figure that if there is an increase in CD spinners, then there is almost undoubtedly an increase in music piracy. When DJ's can just search and download their new releases and burn them instead of going all the way to an unorganized shop, searching for hours for them and buying them. This leads to a further increase in music prices which will be a further deterrent for new DJ's. Good lord, what a horrible cycle. I don't even want to think about what else could happen.

Its true that people really take the piss and never buy a single thing ever. Im all for digital music as it opens up styles of music to people who just can't get access to it.

I dont think the 12" will die, it still will be used but I would think CD Tables to become very much more popular as they really are a great bit of kit. As a pround owner of a Denon DN-S5000, spinning on it really is just like splipping on a 12". A lot neater to as you can compile about 5-6 12"'s on the one disc, saving all that mess and clutter from getting the vinly out.

I'm not really that much a fan of the pay per download services, when I buy something I like to see what I'm buying and would prefer to have a real copy of a record than a digital one any day.

I dunno anything about vinyl Vs. CD because I don't spin but I'm worried about the lack of actual music places. This is just probably my problem because
1. I live in the US
2. I live in one of the most dead spots of the US musically.
But anyway, here there are no music stores left period. The store that I used to order all my imports from just closed and all the chains are rather worthless when it comes to anything outside the top 40. So I'm forced to download until I can find a place I can afford. Which is sad.
Still, if vinyl's hung on this long, what's to stop it now?

I don't spin myself but i can see that vinyls seems to be an exclusive thing. Im not sure if vinyls will die any time soon but vinyl releases on CD-R would be great so at least people who haven't got decks can listen to vinyl releases. As for legit mp3's im all for that but only at a fair price but sometimes i like a physical CD. I think vinyl still has a long life yet, I mean when CD's came out people were saying it was the death of tape yet it took it's time.

The imminent death of vinyls is a ludicrous idea. Once CD decks of equal or better calibre than ones such as the Pioneer CDJ-1000 etc are as affordable as your average turntable, then perhaps maybe this will eventually happen. If this is the case then I'm not all that worried - all my existing vinyls could be, with a little time and effort, be easily thrown onto CD. However, I enjoy mixing using vinyl and I think CD decks will be responsible for taking some of the skill out of mixing.

I think (hope?!) that vinyl will be around for some time yet.

I remember something about a vinyl recorder going back awhile ago but it was very expensive and you had to calibrate it correctly.
