Post subject: Interesting Statement in Chemical Brothers CD Inlay |
|
|
Had one statement, I bet their label made it and not them but who knows.
PIRACY IS KILLING MUSIC
I wonder what you people think, see after years of gouging us on cd prices then mp3's showed up and now they are doing what I wished they had done for years, which is lowering cd prices. I bought UNKLE's cd a weeks ago for 13.99 (without tax) and today I bought Chemical Brothers 2cd for 17.99. I've been a cd buyer for years and I always buy cd's when I can and now that they dropped the prices, it helps people like me, want to buy more and I go into the cd store happier. Funny how HMV in Ontario sets imports at like 34.99 + but they are not really imports because they are actually produced and made by a company in Montreal. Anyway, is the statement true or not and why?

My opinion on that is no.
If the music's good enough then I will buy it. CD prices have fallen and they are at an ok level now, they will never be cheap enough, nothing ever is.
A problem that I see, especially with a genre where releases are mostly 12" vinyl is a lot of folk dont have the means to play the music. Harcore CD buffs who dont have any decks to play music on will download and just slap on CD.
I dont see how its killing music, I totally disagree. I listen to MP3's and spend most of my money I earn on the releases, equipment to play and enjoy it. they are also good to grab hold of a tune to see if its worth buying, cuts down on the spaggage in the collection.

Technically though, it more of the music industry that is killing music (although it sounds odd).
It has been proven that artists receive barely any of the income from their CDs, in fact they receive about 2% from CD sales. So, if a CD costs $20, the artist only sees 40 cents. The other $19.60 per CD goes straight to the record label. Even though you add up all the CDs that are sold, the record companies receive far more than the artists do. Most artists make more money off their concerts/live events anyway.

i do believe the "record companies" are loosing out on the profits as for the musicians themselves, i don't think it hurts them at all....
At the end of the day a musician cant really come out in full support for the downloading of music, the record company controls everything about then even what they can and can not say...
A prime example here of why i have a dislike for the "major" record labels... australian idol just finished now the guy who won did get a recording deal with BMG... but get this
he has to sell in excess of 750,000 records before he gets any commission or money out of it....
I think the power should be given back to the musicans and taken away from the greedy record companies

That's terrible. Also, is Australian Idol like American Idol where talented singers sell-out to big business?

I dunno about this because the times have changed. No longer are companies being able to sell crap to people. People have fought back and after years of screwing us with high cd prices, we turned around. See the whole thing comes down to change, cd companies expected customers to stay the same and that never happens, so they did nothing and got left in the dust yet they blame mp3 downloading. I think that dumb business decisions and the amount of money that they are spending on lawsuits and dumb technology and not creatively marketing real artists is hurting them. You cannot blame one thing because most problems have more than one cause. I'd argue that mp3's have pushed deejays more into North America because Johan Gielen, Tiesto, Armin, Ferry Corsten and others were unknowns if it was not for mp3's. Remember the music industry had their chance to jump on the mp3 bandwagon and control it in 1997 but they said no, their loss. What a loss $$$$ wise.

There are places starting to sell out digital music on the net but all these are based on pop/chart artists. Not much good for the avid trance and techno follower.

Exactly. It'd be impossible for a technohead or tranceaddict, etc. to find good electronic music online at places like iTunes, the new Napster, etc. (BTW, the new owner of Napster lives in my town )

I have to agree. I think that with the genre we listen to if you haven't got a decent vinyl player there are no CD's to accomodate. In my opinion mp3 has done a lot for music in general in terms of opening up other types of music to people who don't get the chance to listen to anything else but whats in the charts.

To answer the question, no I don't think piracy is killing music. The artists I like are still making good music.
And still artists like Nickelback and Eminem are selling millions of copies of their CDs, and they are the most widely available on the Internet because of their popularity.
The CDs that I buy don't seem to be going down in price at all. And they still rip you off for imports.
If some company got smart and starting recording their vinyl releases to mp3 and selling them on the Internet, I think they would have a great business going. People like me without decks still love the music but must either hunt for good CDs or download. I think that they would make tons of money.
Hopefully ID&T or another company tries this or licenses out their music to pay-per-download companies.

yes, that exactly what happened
the guy who won is somewhat like a puppet where the record company is pulling his strings, they may have a good voice, but they do lack some artist flair when a musician is much more then the voice on the song imo

The big beef i have is when record companies re-release albums or cds with a bonus disc which only has remixes on it
they have done it with all 3 of the faithless albums
and also rob dougans album,
it all comes down to making more money
hey maybe we can sell more if we get *insert producer* to remix a few tracks and add it as a bonus cd
it shits me...so for some reason i have 6 faithless albums but have doubled up on 3 of the same cd

I don't think it is killing the industry. Hopefully the companies who thrived off publishing crap will have to sober up and work on quality instead of lining their own pockets.
And speaking of paying for a music download, Armada have just started doing this. Not MP3 but 128k WMA format. It'll be interesting to see how that takes off for them.

128k WMA format? Not too sure on the quality of that encoding method. If I where paying for music I would want it the best quality available or at least CD quality. Just because your downloading it dont mean you have to put up with less quality when your buying it.
