A lot of people say that Paul Oakenfold is crap these days

but back in 94-2000 he was amazing
remember his goa essential mixes?
or his essential mix from space ibiza in 99?

or what about his remix of Mansun - Wide Open Space?
or his global underground compilations?

I could go on and on!!!

HE WAS DA MAN!!

The first Essential mix I ever heard was on 26.09.99 and was Paul Oakenfold live at the Rojam in Shanghai, China. What a mix that was with tunes as follows.....

The Taste Experience - 'Highlander' (Unknown)
Everything But The Girl - 'Five Fathoms' (Club 69 Future Club Mix) (Virgin)
Progress - 'Symphonic Music' (Unknown)
Paradise - 'Original Mix' (Unknown)
Artist Unknown - 'Untitled' (White Label)
Artist Unknown - 'Untitled' (White Label)
White Label - Unknown (Bonzai Records)
Amanda Ghost - 'Filthy Mind' (WEA)
Moogwai - 'Viola' (Perfecto)
Space Man - 'D J Orkideo Remix/Stage One/Space Manouveres' (Perfecto)
Mobile Bitch - 'Sex For Pleasure' (Bitch Records)
Planet Perfecto - 'Bullet In The Gun' (Perfecto)
Skip Raiders - 'Another Day' (Trance Mix) (Perfecto)
Amoeba Assassin - 'Speedway Revisited' (Amoeba Assassin)
Georgio Moroder - 'The Chase' (Perfecto Remix) (Polydor)

I still listen to it to this day as Very Happy Cool

All past Essential mix info can be found here http://www.aimless.demon.co.uk/em/emindex.htm

read sunday paper, the rich pay list
http://ste-paper.timesonline.co.uk/paylist/11042/articles/artikel_STI-MG_STM_20031102_42_254.html
he made 4.5 million pounds in 2003,just half a million short of kylie,
not bad for one year!

maybe so, but he must be doing something right, money doesnt grow on trees, people wont hand you that much money for nothing!
sometimes sucess, and financial sucess, tends to bring animosity and resentment.

personally i know im one of those people that dont like his recent stuff, like you mention, and hearing all that crap with BT and jan johnston and crap, doesnt inspire good feelings,

but seeing those song titles, cds titles and names of certain mixes, brings back memories and feelings on hearing them, and damn damn they were good. makes me forget everything else,

at least we have still got that music, and it'll be around as long as our lifetime and beyond. he'll be remeber for the great music he made

yes he was da man
and hopefully he will be da man once more at least in the future
the skill and talent in those tracks you mentioned isnt easily earned, or given, and its probably just as hard to loose or forget that special touch

I'm one of the weird ones that like Paul's new stuff. lol Not love it, and I'm still not ready to buy the newish album, but I don't have a prob with it. Still, he did introduce me to proper trance a couple of years ago, so I will always have a special place in my collection for his mixes.

I liked Paul before, and I like him now. He's living out his musical dream by always trying to make something new. Allthough some of his newer stuff aren't of my likeing I still think he's doing a good job.

Never really been a big fan of him. Liked his Goa stuff but not really liking his style that much. Bit too soft all the time for my liking.

He is crap these days but

1998 was a great year then he set the standard in 1999 with the Essential Mix World Tour and I don't think anyone has touched that. Slag him off, all you want but seriously he was responsible for putting the dj on the map.

Essential Mix @ Home in Ibiza was excellent. its what made me like him to start with. his another world/travelling mixes are what started his sampling of new style. I loved and still love those CDs but in a different way than his "classic" stuff (1999). I saw him in 2003 after his lame pop album w/ starry eyed surprise came out, and he started out playing classic old trance like he used to then ended with a guy on an electric guitar playing starry eyed surprise (and other new crap). That kinda blew it for me. Ive lost my interest.

Global Underground 007 New York, I have said this before it is an amazing mix cd.

IMO the best he has done.

Just got Great Wall and is alright........... miss out the Justin Timberlake and Madonna tracks and it would be ok.

Does not pack a punch though!

Yea I liked him back in the day...

but I saw a set recently @ cream in ibiza in august and he just didn't have a clue

his set was all over the place and he just didn't seem to care. Luckily Tiesto & PvD were on form to pick up the pieces after him that night

Not been a fan of his sets live as well. Heard a few here and there and they just have lack some energy and pace.

i like alot of his new stuff, and its good to see someone has the balls to be different and try new things, instead staying pigeon-holed in some tiny little sub-sub-genre. i think he cops alot of unfair negative feedback for his work.

its ironic that everyone will always criticize an artist for doing the same hting over and over, and then when someone expands their horizons and tries new styles (or in oakenfolds case, return to their roots), they also cop sh*t.

You can't win in any situation, there'll always be someone bitching about what you do. You just have to be yourself and do your own thing and hope it works out Smile

Yes Oaky has changed his musical style quite a bit. Frankly I don't care for it so much but I still will always show him respect. He is one of the main causes why dance music has become so popular especially over here in the U.S. Granted I do miss mixes like Cuba, China, and Creamfields on his 99 world tour. But one thing I do know is that maybe the stuff he puts out on Cd's might be crap but he can still put on a live performence and I think that is where a DJ is best represented. Hopefully, he won't start to suck live, then that is when I say he needs to put up his decks.

i would have to agree with you there.. he used to be the sht!!! all his music sounds the same nowadays.. i guess once you get popular you tend to experiment too much at the expense of losing touch of what made you big in the first place... but yah, his music nowadays sounds like crap... i could make better music banging on tin cans while beat boxing with my mouth haha

he is wat a dj is suppose to b....... i can say i don't like his music that much nemore... but isn't a dj suppose to innovate and reinvent... ? he obviously does that better than any other dj i kno of... he thinks out of the box and introduces sounds that no one else has brought out
